Heart formulas dosed to the claim, from omega-3 to beta-glucans
Heart health is one of the areas we cover as a heart health supplement manufacturer, taking custom supplements for premium brands from formulation to finished product in our UK facility. We make omega-3 and plant sterol softgels; capsules and tablets with thiamine, B vitamins or black garlic; powders, sachets and stick packs with beta-glucans or potassium; and liquids, shots and gummies. Every formula is built on nutrients with authorised claims: EPA and DHA, plant sterols, oat and barley beta-glucans, potassium and thiamine. Each goes in at the dose its claim sets, from 0.165 mg of thiamine to 3 g of beta-glucans a day. Every batch is tested by accredited partner laboratories and comes with a certificate of analysis. Your formula is yours.
In England, the NHS Health Check invites adults aged 40 to 74 every five years for a blood pressure and cholesterol test (NHS, 2023), so more customers know their numbers.
The grades we specify as a heart health supplement manufacturer
We specify every active by form, grade, marker and dose, use only vitamin and mineral forms permitted in GB and EU food supplements, and approve every supplier before first use.
| Ingredient | Forms and grades | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| EPA and DHA | Fish oil, concentrates as ethyl esters or re-esterified triglycerides, algal oil, krill oil | Specified by EPA and DHA content and oxidation limits; see omega-3 supplement manufacturing |
| Plant sterols and stanols | Unesterified sterol powders from vegetable oils or tall oil; sterol and stanol esters, which are oils | Labels declare unesterified sterols or stanols, so ester grades are converted |
| Beta-glucans | Oat and barley concentrates, graded by beta-glucan content and molecular weight | Viscosity drives the cholesterol claim's effect; yeast beta-glucans are a different molecule |
| Potassium | Chloride (about 52% potassium), bicarbonate (39%), citrate monohydrate (36%), gluconate (17%) | Bulky: 300 mg of potassium takes about 0.6 g of chloride or 0.8 g of citrate |
| Thiamine (vitamin B1) | Hydrochloride, mononitrate, monophosphate chloride, pyrophosphate chloride | Milligram doses; the mononitrate suits dry blends |
| Aged black garlic | Cloves, powder or extract, specified by S-allyl cysteine | No authorised claim, so it sits beside a nutrient that has one |
Every label value comes from the exact grade on the certificate of analysis.
Aged black garlic
Black garlic is whole garlic held at controlled heat and humidity until the cloves turn black and soft through Maillard browning. In a 2023 study, bulbs held at 70°C and 80% relative humidity reached about 139 times the S-allyl cysteine of fresh Thai garlic; levels rose early in heating, fell with longer heating, and dropped by about 15% in chilled storage. The authors found it the most abundant bioactive compound in black garlic (Manoonphol and colleagues, Foods, 2023), so we specify and test every batch by it.
Why we weigh omega-3 doses against a heart rhythm signal
Development runs as a paid R&D stage, which can be included with an order of the right size.
Each claim sets its own dose
The claim sets the dose. The EPA and DHA heart claim needs only a source of EPA and DHA, with 250 mg a day stated on the label, while the blood pressure and triglyceride claims need 3 g and 2 g. Plant sterols need at least 0.8 g a day for their claim, and 1.5 to 3 g for the claims on lowering blood cholesterol. Beta-glucans need 1 g per portion and 3 g a day. Potassium and thiamine need at least a source level, which we set at 15% of the nutrient reference value per daily dose: 300 mg and 0.165 mg.
Omega-3 is dosed with care. In a 2021 meta-analysis of seven large outcome trials with 81,210 participants, marine omega-3 supplements carried a heart rhythm safety signal that was stronger in trials testing more than 1 g a day (Gencer and colleagues, Circulation, 2021), so we weigh every omega-3 dose against it.
Sterols with meals, beta-glucans by viscosity
Plant sterols act in the gut, where they compete with cholesterol for absorption, so directions pair them with a main meal. Esters dissolve in fat, while unesterified sterols need micronised or emulsified grades to disperse. EPA, DHA and coenzyme Q10 are fat-soluble, and the oil's form matters: in a trial in 72 volunteers, bioavailability from re-esterified triglycerides was 124% of natural fish oil, and from ethyl esters 73% (Dyerberg and colleagues, 2010). Beta-glucans work through viscosity, which heat, shear and enzymes reduce, so we specify molecular weight and check viscosity on receipt.
Oxidising oils, fragile thiamine and salty potassium
Fish and algal oils oxidise, so we hold them under nitrogen, add mixed tocopherols, and track peroxide value, anisidine value and TOTOX against the GOED Voluntary Monograph's maximums of 5, 20 and 26 (GOED, 2026). Thiamine breaks down with heat, alkaline conditions and sulphites, so we keep it away from alkaline minerals and size its overage from stability data. Potassium salts taste salty and bitter at claim doses, and the citrate attracts moisture, so potassium suits flavoured powders and effervescent tablets built with our flavour development and taste masking work.
Products with added plant sterols must advise regular fruit and vegetables "to help maintain carotenoid levels", so we keep sterols out of carotenoid formulas. Labels advise anyone taking medicines to speak to their doctor or pharmacist before use.
Softgels hold the oils; sticks carry 3 g of beta-glucans
We make every format below in our UK facility, which is ISO 9001, HACCP and GMP certified by BSI, and FDA registered. BRCGS implementation under way, certification expected in early 2027.
- Softgels carry omega-3, sterol esters and coenzyme Q10 in oil, sealed from oxygen. See softgel manufacturing.
- Capsules and tablets carry thiamine, B vitamins, black garlic and cocoa flavanols; capsules are GMP certified. See capsule and tablet manufacturing.
- Powders, sachets and stick packs carry gram doses: 3 g of beta-glucans, dispersible plant sterols and potassium citrate. Our fibre and prebiotic supplements page covers beta-glucan grades.
- Liquids and shots carry emulsified omega-3 or plant sterols in a measured dose, and are GMP certified.
- Gummies carry omega-3 and B vitamins at modest doses, and are GMP certified, with an active assay on every batch as standard.
Heart formulas sit within our healthy ageing supplement manufacturing range, beside muscle, bone and eye health.
Register wording for heart claims, from EPA and DHA to cocoa flavanols
As of October 2026, these heart claims are on the GB nutrition and health claims register and the EU register, in this exact wording.
| Nutrient | Authorised claim | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| EPA and DHA | "EPA and DHA contribute to the normal function of the heart" | A source of EPA and DHA; label states 250 mg a day |
| DHA and EPA | "DHA and EPA contribute to the maintenance of normal blood pressure"; "DHA and EPA contribute to the maintenance of normal blood triglyceride levels" | 3 g and 2 g a day; label advises not exceeding a supplemental 5 g of EPA and DHA combined; not for foods targeting children |
| Plant sterols and stanols | "Plant sterols/stanols contribute to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels" | Label states at least 0.8 g a day |
| Beta-glucans | "Beta-glucans contribute to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels" | At least 1 g of beta-glucans from oats, oat bran, barley, barley bran or mixtures per quantified portion; label states 3 g a day |
| Potassium | "Potassium contributes to the maintenance of normal blood pressure" | A source of potassium |
| Thiamine | "Thiamine contributes to the normal function of the heart" | A source of thiamine |
| Vitamins B6 and B12, and folate | "Vitamin B6 contributes to normal homocysteine metabolism", with the same wording for vitamin B12 and folate | A source of each |
| Cocoa flavanols | "Cocoa flavanols help maintain the elasticity of blood vessels, which contributes to normal blood flow" | Capsules or tablets of high-flavanol cocoa extract giving at least 200 mg of cocoa flavanols (degree of polymerisation 1 to 10) a day; label states 200 mg a day |
Plant sterols and stanols are authorised for food supplements in GB and the EU at up to 3 g a day. Their labels carry set statements: "with added plant sterols" or "with added plant stanols" beside the name; that the product "is not intended for people who do not need to control their blood cholesterol level"; advice against more than 3 g a day; and advice for people on cholesterol-lowering medication, pregnant or breastfeeding women and children under five. Plant sterols, plant stanol esters, and oat and barley beta-glucans also hold claims on lowering blood cholesterol, at 1.5 to 3 g of sterols or stanols and 3 g of beta-glucans a day; brands receive the exact wording at label review.
In the US, labels make structure and function claims backed by evidence, notified to FDA, with FDA's standard disclaimer; FDA's health claims for plant sterol and stanol esters and for oat, barley and psyllium fibre use its own wording. Our claims and regulation page covers each market in depth.
Red yeast rice, market by market
Where red yeast rice can be sold depends on the market. Its active, monacolin K, is structurally identical to the medicine lovastatin. In the US, FDA regards red yeast rice products with considerable monacolin K as unapproved new drugs, which are not sold legally there (NCCIH, 2022). As of October 2026, EU law limits monacolins to less than 3 mg per daily portion, with set warnings, well below the 10 mg a day the authorised claim needs, and in May 2026 EU member states backed a Commission proposal to ban monacolins from foods, supplements included (Complife, May 2026). We review each red yeast rice brief against the rules of its target markets, and build formulas for normal blood cholesterol on plant sterols and beta-glucans, which carry authorised claims in GB and the EU.
Oils encapsulated under nitrogen and thiamine premixed for every unit
Our HACCP study for each product type, reviewed annually, sets the critical control points.
- Approve and receive. Every material comes from an approved supplier, with a certificate of analysis checked against our specification: EPA, DHA and oxidation for oils, sterol content, beta-glucan content and molecular weight, and S-allyl cysteine.
- Pre-blend. Milligram nutrients such as thiamine are diluted step by step into a carrier, so every unit carries its dose.
- Blend, fill or encapsulate. Powders are blended to a set uniformity and filled by weight; oils are blended under nitrogen and encapsulated; tablets are compressed and film-coated.
- Pack and check labels. Packs carry oxygen, light and moisture barriers, and labels are verified on every batch as our critical control point, CCP-01.
- Retain and release. We keep three retained samples per batch for shelf life plus one year, and quality control releases each batch against its specification.
Fish, crustaceans and oats, a cereal containing gluten, are controlled under our allergen management plan, with yellow colour coding, from goods-in to label. Plant sterols and stanol esters from soybean oil are exempt from soy allergen labelling in GB and the EU.
Sterols, beta-glucans and oil oxidation, tested batch by batch
Every batch is tested by accredited partner laboratories (ISO/IEC 17025), and batch testing is part of every order. Quality control releases every batch against its specification, and nothing is dispatched without quality control sign-off. Our testing and batch release page explains each method.
| Test | Typical method | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| EPA and DHA | Gas chromatography of fatty acid methyl esters | Claim conditions and label values hold |
| Oxidation | Peroxide value, anisidine value, TOTOX | Oil quality against the GOED limits |
| Plant sterols and stanols | Gas chromatography | The claim dose, as unesterified sterols |
| Beta-glucans | AOAC 995.16 | At least 1 g per portion |
| Potassium and minerals | ICP-OES | Source levels and label values |
| Thiamine and S-allyl cysteine | HPLC | Potency, identity and strength |
| Contaminants | ICP-MS for heavy metals; dioxins and PCBs in marine oils; microbiology | Legal limits for food supplements and oils |

Questions brands ask
What does a heart health supplement manufacturer do?
A heart health supplement manufacturer develops and produces heart health products, from formulation to finished pack. At British VitaTech that means choosing omega-3, plant sterols, beta-glucans, potassium and thiamine at the doses their authorised claims need, designing formats people take every day, and writing the claims each market allows. We make softgels, capsules, tablets, powders, liquids and gummies in the UK, every batch is tested by accredited partner laboratories, and the brand owns the formula.
Which heart health claims are authorised in the UK and EU?
As of October 2026, heart claims belong to specific nutrients, each with set conditions. "EPA and DHA contribute to the normal function of the heart" needs a source of EPA and DHA and a label stating 250 mg a day. Plant sterols and beta-glucans carry claims on normal blood cholesterol levels, at 0.8 g and 3 g a day. Potassium carries a blood pressure claim and thiamine a heart function claim, each at a source level.
Can you make plant sterol supplements?
Yes, as softgels, powders and shots. As of October 2026, plant sterols and stanols are authorised for food supplements in GB and the EU at up to 3 g a day. "Plant sterols/stanols contribute to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels" needs a label stating that the effect comes with at least 0.8 g a day. Every product with added sterols carries set label statements, including advice to avoid more than 3 g a day.
Can you make red yeast rice supplements?
It depends on the market. Its active, monacolin K, is structurally identical to the medicine lovastatin, and FDA regards red yeast rice products with considerable monacolin K as unapproved new drugs that are not sold legally in the US. As of October 2026, EU law limits monacolins to less than 3 mg per daily portion, with set warnings, and in May 2026 EU member states backed a Commission proposal to ban them from foods, supplements included. We review each red yeast rice brief against the rules of its target markets, and build formulas for normal blood cholesterol on plant sterols and beta-glucans, which carry authorised claims in GB and the EU.
Can you make aged black garlic supplements?
Yes, as capsules, tablets and powders specified by S-allyl cysteine, which a 2023 study found to be the most abundant bioactive compound in black garlic. Black garlic is whole garlic aged at controlled heat and humidity until the cloves turn black. As of October 2026, garlic carries no authorised health claim in GB or the EU, so we pair it with a nutrient that has one, such as thiamine or potassium.
How much omega-3 should a heart health supplement contain?
Enough for the claim you want to make. As of October 2026, the heart claim needs only a source of EPA and DHA, with the label stating that the effect comes with 250 mg a day, while the blood pressure and triglyceride claims need 3 g and 2 g a day. A 2021 meta-analysis of large trials found a heart rhythm safety signal that was stronger above 1 g a day, so we weigh every dose against it.
Which formats suit heart health supplements?
The dose decides the format. Softgels carry omega-3, sterol esters and coenzyme Q10 in oil. Powders, sachets and stick packs carry gram doses of beta-glucans, plant sterols and potassium. Capsules and tablets carry thiamine, B vitamins and black garlic, and liquids carry emulsified omega-3 or sterols. We make every format in-house, and our capsules, gummies and liquids are GMP certified by BSI.
