Supplement reformulation benchmarked against your current product

British VitaTech reformulates existing supplements for premium wellness brands and makes the new version in our Leicester facility. Supplement reformulation with us starts with a technical review of your formula. Formulation rounds are benchmarked against retained samples of your current product, and the new version is proved with blind triangle tests, assays by accredited partner laboratories and stability in your final pack. We update your labels for the UK, the EU and the US, prepare any notification the change triggers and plan the cut-over around your stock of the current version. You receive the updated specification, the test and stability results, and a document file that is yours, with a change record for every version.

Why brands reformulate products customers already buy

Supplement reformulation changes a product your customers already buy, so the bar is higher than for a launch: the new version must keep the taste, texture and dose they know, and every word on the label must stay true.

Brands reformulate for reasons like these:

  • New evidence. EFSA's adult upper level for vitamin B6 is 12 mg a day, so higher-dose formulas deserve a review. Claims move too: the EU has refused a claim that creatine supplementation improves cognitive function, after EFSA found no cause and effect, so EU labels can't carry it. A better-studied form, or a branded and clinically studied ingredient with human data at your dose, can lift a formula.
  • Rule changes. As of October 2026, titanium dioxide (E 171) is banned as a food additive in the EU but remains authorised in Great Britain, so we build products for both markets without it. In the US, FD&C Red No. 3 must leave foods, dietary supplements included, by 15 January 2027. EU-wide maximum levels for vitamins and minerals are being prepared, so we design high-dose EU formulas with room to step down.
  • New markets. We design for the strictest market on your plan, because the rules differ. As of October 2026, the EU accepts only the vitamin and mineral forms on its permitted list for food supplements, and novel food status differs between GB, the EU and the US: allulose is not authorised in GB or the EU, and monk fruit extract has no sweetener authorisation there, though the US uses both as sweeteners.
  • Cost and supply. When a grade is discontinued, a supplier fails approval or a cost moves, we specify an equivalent and you sign it off. Overages sized from your product's measured loss, rather than habit, stop you paying for active the label doesn't need.
  • Clean label, sugar and allergens. Shorter ingredient lists, colours from foods, sugar-free versions and recipes without a major allergen widen your market. Our sugar reduction and clean-label formulation work covers sweeteners, polyols and natural colours. Moving a gummy from gelatine to pectin opens it to vegan and halal buyers, with certification arranged for your product.

Our R&D team proposes formula updates when ingredients improve or market conditions shift, as it does for a UK pouch brand, a client since 2023, for which we developed four distinct formulas. In the brand's words: "They've felt less like a supplier and more like a partner in the business."

From brief to cut-over in eight signed-off stages

Every product reformulation runs through eight stages, with your sign-off at every gate.

  1. Brief and mutual NDA. Why the product is changing, its markets and claims, and what must not change, with a mutual NDA signed before you share a formula.
  2. Technical review. Your formula, specification, label and stability data, with every new ingredient screened in-house for novel food status in each market.
  3. Benchmark. Retained samples of your current product set the targets for taste, texture, appearance and dose.
  4. Formulation rounds. Bench samples are tested against the benchmark until one matches it, or beats it where you asked for an improvement.
  5. Proof. Sensory tests, assays by accredited partner laboratories and physical tests confirm the new version, and you approve the sample and the finished product specification.
  6. Stability. The new formula goes on stability in your final pack.
  7. Labels and notifications. We update labels and claims for each market and prepare any notification the change triggers.
  8. Cut-over. First production of the new version is released by quality control, timed against your stock of the current version and its labels.

Matching taste and texture

A reformulation succeeds or fails on the palate. Sugar binds water, so removing it changes water activity, chew and set. A different mineral salt brings a different bitterness, and a new sweetener system arrives and fades at a different pace. We test blind. Triangle tests to ISO 4120 ask assessors to pick the odd sample out of three: with 24 assessors, 13 or more correct answers mark a real difference at 5% significance. A difference test that finds nothing does not prove sameness, so where the goal is no detectable change, we run ISO 4120 as a similarity test and size the panel for that question. Descriptive profiling scores sweetness, bitterness, linger and texture, and instrumental measures of hardness, water activity and colour back the panel. Our flavour development and taste masking work rebuilds any note the new formula loses.

Stability re-testing

A new formula is a new product for stability. New ingredients bring new reactions: reducing sugars brown with amino acids, vitamin C oxidises in solution, and a new mineral form can shift pH or water activity. Your current shelf life belongs to the current formula, so we start stability on the new version in your final pack, at long-term (25°C, 60% relative humidity) and accelerated (40°C, 75% relative humidity) conditions taken from ICH stability guidance, reset overages from the results and confirm the printed date with real-time data. If a lower dose is needed, each nutrient must still reach the amount its claims depend on, to the last day. Our page on stability and shelf life testing sets out the methods.

Allergen, sweetener and claim changes on the new label

As of October 2026, in GB and the EU the ingredients list runs in descending order of weight and emphasises any of the 14 listed allergens, and a sweetener adds "with sweetener(s)" to the name. "Gluten-free" needs no more than 20 mg/kg of gluten in the food as sold, against less than 20 ppm in the US. In the US, sesame is a major food allergen that labels must declare, a new structure/function claim is notified to FDA after first marketing, and a new dietary ingredient may need a notification before launch. Removing an allergen from the recipe is half the job: our allergen management plan, with yellow colour coding, controls cross-contact from goods-in to label. We check whether each EU national notification needs updating, and our claims and regulation review re-checks every claim against the new amounts.

Packs, artwork and the first batches

A new formula can need a new pack. A moisture-sensitive ingredient may need a desiccant or a higher-barrier bottle, and a larger fill can mean a bigger capsule, a new count or a different scoop. We confirm the pack in stability, update the artwork for each market and withdraw superseded artwork, so an old label never meets the new formula. The first batches of the new version are checked against the approved sample, and you receive their certificates of analysis with the updated specification.

Every version of your formula stays yours, change record included

Your formula is yours. With us, the formula, its specification and the data behind it belong to your brand, and we never sell it or offer it to anyone else. That covers every version: the reformulated formula, its sensory and stability data, its claims review and the record of what changed and why. Read how formula ownership works.

Check who owns your current formula. If your agreement gives it to your current manufacturer, we never use that manufacturer's documents: we develop a new formula to your brief, and that formula is yours. Moving production at the same time? We reformulate within the same project, as our guide to moving your supplements to a new manufacturer explains.

What a product reformulation includes, from review to change record

  • A technical review, with in-house novel food screening for every new ingredient
  • Formulation rounds and blind sensory work, including triangle tests to ISO 4120
  • Assays by accredited partner laboratories, and physical tests such as water activity and hardness
  • Stability on the new formula in your final pack
  • A label and claims review for the UK, the EU and the US, with notification updates prepared
  • A document file that is yours, with a change record for every version

This work sits in our R&D stage. R&D is a paid stage that can be included with an order of the right size. We scope it before work begins.

Every batch is tested by accredited partner laboratories (ISO/IEC 17025) as part of every order, and quality control releases every batch against its specification. Labels are verified on every batch as the critical control point in our HACCP study, which matters most in the first runs after a label changes. British VitaTech is ISO 9001, HACCP and GMP certified by BSI, and FDA registered. New products start with private label and contract supplement manufacturing, and changes across a range and several markets run as large programmes and multi-market launches.

Blind proof and stability before launch, cut-over around your stock

We don't publish timescales. Each reformulation depends on the change, your materials, the sensory and stability work and your markets, so we set the plan with you after the technical review. We commit to:

  • A written reformulation plan naming every stage, owner and decision
  • A scoped R&D stage, agreed before work begins
  • Your sign-off at every gate: sample, specification, label and first batch
  • No change to your formula without your written sign-off
  • Blind sensory proof against your current product before you approve
  • Stability started on the new formula before launch, with real-time data to the printed date
  • A cut-over planned around your stock of the current version and its labels
  • Regulatory checks for each market, dated and repeated when the rules change

Where this is going

To 2030

Up: planned EU maximum levels, US colour rules and clean-label demand drive reformulation, while simplification trims long stacks

To 2036

Up: lower harmonised ceilings in force in the EU, with GB likely to follow; 'responder' formulas depend on testing-led evidence

What to watch

Changes customers can taste, a backlash against over-optimisation and the safety of multi-ingredient stacks as ceilings fall

Questions brands ask

When should a brand reformulate a supplement?

Reformulate when the evidence, the rules, your markets, your costs or your customers' expectations move. As of October 2026, rule-driven triggers include the US deadline for FD&C Red No. 3 on 15 January 2027 and the EU ban on titanium dioxide, which remains authorised in Great Britain. A discontinued grade, a sugar-free version or a recipe without a major allergen are reasons too. We review live formulas against these changes and propose updates when they matter.

Will our customers notice the change?

Not if the reformulation is done properly, and we prove it before you approve. Retained samples of your current product set the benchmark, and blind triangle tests to ISO 4120 show whether tasters can tell the two versions apart; where the aim is no detectable change, we run the test for similarity, with the panel sized for that question. Descriptive profiling and instrumental measures of texture, water activity and colour back the panel.

Does a reformulated supplement need new stability testing?

Yes. Shelf life belongs to one formula in one pack, so a change of ingredient, form or supplier needs new data. We start stability on the new version in your final pack, at long-term and accelerated conditions taken from ICH stability guidance, reset overages from the results and confirm the printed date with real-time data. Your current product keeps its own shelf life until the cut-over to the new version.

What changes on the label after a reformulation?

Usually the ingredients list, the amounts per daily portion and any claim whose conditions depend on them. As of October 2026, GB and EU labels emphasise the 14 listed allergens in the ingredients list, and products containing a sweetener add "with sweetener(s)" to the name. US labels update the Supplement Facts panel, and a new structure/function claim is notified to FDA. We check whether each EU national notification needs updating and verify the new label on every batch.

Who owns the reformulated formula?

You do. Your formula is yours. With us, the formula, its specification and the data behind it belong to your brand, including every version we develop, its sensory and stability data and the record of each change. We never sell it or offer it to anyone else. If your current manufacturer owns your existing formula, we never use its documents: we develop a new formula to your brief, and that formula is yours.

Is reformulation work charged?

R&D is a paid stage that can be included with an order of the right size. Reformulation sits within that stage: the technical review, formulation rounds, blind sensory work, stability on the new formula and the label and claims review for each market. We scope it before work begins, so you know what it delivers, and the specifications, test results and stability data it produces belong to your brand.

Can you upgrade a product to a branded or clinically studied ingredient?

Yes, where the evidence fits your product. A clinically studied ingredient earns its place only when your product matches the research: the same material, at the same dose, in a format that delivers it. We check the dose against your serving, the claims each market allows and the licence terms for naming the ingredient on pack, then prove the new version with sensory, assay and stability work before you approve it.
