An audited organic claim on capsules, powders and gummies
From certified organic ingredients, British VitaTech, an organic supplement manufacturer for premium brands, makes custom organic capsules, powders, gummies and liquids at our Leicester facility. Organic capsules use HPMC plant shells, gummies set with non-amidated pectin and organic sugars, and powders build on organic plant proteins, greens, mushrooms and botanicals. Organic certification is arranged for your product: we don't hold it as a standing credential, so before your first organic batch we put certification in place for your programme with an approved control body such as Soil Association Certification. Your formula is yours.
Organic is a protected claim, defined in law and checked by inspection. It gives your brand an audited claim in place of an undefined one, and its permitted lists already leave out synthetic colours and most additives. We pair the organic certificate with a short, recognisable ingredient list; our page on sugar reduction and clean-label formulation covers the design side.
UK organic food and drink sales rose 4.2% in 2025, a fourteenth year of growth in a row, with supermarket sales up 7%, while only 3% of UK farmland is certified organic and the market relies heavily on imports (Soil Association Certification, Organic Market Report 2026). For private label organic supplements, that makes ingredient sourcing and certificate control as important as the formula itself.
Why your brand and our site each need organic certification
"Organic" is protected in law in the UK, the EU and the US, and the business that prepares an organic product must be certified. As of October 2026, anyone in the UK who produces, prepares, stores, imports, exports, markets, sells or contracts out organic products must be certified by an approved UK control body, and so must any third party they use, so your brand and our facility each need certification, which we arrange for your programme. Approved control bodies include Soil Association Certification (GB-ORG-05), Organic Farmers and Growers (GB-ORG-02) and the Organic Food Federation (GB-ORG-04).
For your brand, certification involves four steps:
- Registration. Your brand registers with a control body, and we arrange certification of our Leicester site as the processor of your product.
- Recipe approval. The control body checks each recipe against the organic rules, and each organic ingredient against its supplier's certificate.
- Label approval. It checks the organic wording, the code number and the origin statement before print.
- Inspection. Every certified business is physically inspected at least once a year, with extra visits, mostly unannounced, and samples taken for analysis.
What the label carries, as of October 2026:
| Market | "Organic" in the product name | On the label |
|---|---|---|
| Great Britain | At least 95% of the agricultural ingredients organic; below that, only in the ingredients list | The control body's code (GB-ORG-XX) and an origin statement such as "UK Agriculture"; the EU organic logo is optional |
| EU and Northern Ireland | At least 95% of the agricultural ingredients organic; below that, only in the ingredients list | The control body's code; the EU organic logo, compulsory on prepacked food made there and optional on products from Great Britain, with the place of farming, such as "EU/non-EU Agriculture", beside it |
| US | "Organic": at least 95% organic ingredients, excluding water and salt; "100 percent organic": all of them; "made with organic" plus named ingredients: at least 70% | "Certified organic by" and the certifier's name; the USDA seal is optional on "organic" and "100 percent organic" products |
What an organic supplement manufacturer can and can't add
Organic ingredients and certificates
The 95% counts agricultural ingredients by weight, excluding water and salt, and the same ingredient can't appear in both organic and non-organic form. Every organic ingredient arrives with its supplier's current organic certificate, which we check before the lot is approved, on top of the supplier approval every material goes through. For organic botanicals and powders, we add pesticide residue screening on incoming lots, a direct check on organic integrity.
Where organic vitamins and minerals come from
In the UK and the EU, organic rules allow added vitamins, minerals, amino acids and micronutrients only where the law requires them in that food, as in infant formula. No law requires them in a food supplement, so a UK or EU organic supplement takes its nutrients from organic foods and plants, such as acerola for vitamin C, rather than from isolated vitamin and mineral forms. GB rules also bar calcium carbonate from calcium enrichment of organic food. US organic rules list nutrient vitamins and minerals among the permitted substances, in line with FDA's nutritional quality guidelines, so a US organic formula can include them, with each form approved by your certifier.
Excipients and capsules
Only listed additives may be used in organic food, many of them with conditions. Under GB rules, as of October 2026:
- Capsule shells: HPMC is authorised as encapsulation material, so organic capsules use plant shells.
- Flow and lubrication: magnesium stearate is not on the GB list, and US rules allow it only in "made with organic" products, so we use plant-based flow agents such as organic rice concentrate.
- Glycerol: plant-derived and organic only.
- Silicon dioxide: limited to dried powdered herbs and spices, flavourings and propolis.
- Waxes: beeswax and carnauba wax only as glazing agents for confectionery, and only from organic production.
Organic gummies, powders and herbal formulas
Organic gummies set with non-amidated pectin and organic sugars, carry natural flavourings only, and take their colour from organic fruit and vegetable concentrates; our gummy manufacturing page covers the process. Organic powders build on organic plant proteins, greens, mushrooms and botanicals, covered on our powder supplement manufacturing and herbal supplement manufacturing pages. Because organic rules restrict flow agents, we control particle size and humidity during blending, pack into high-barrier materials and test stability in the final pack.
Separation, cleaning and testing
Where organic and non-organic products share a facility, organic rules keep them apart in time or space: organic runs follow a clean, run continuously until the batch is finished and are recorded in a register, with lots identified so they can't mix. Every batch is tested by accredited partner laboratories (ISO/IEC 17025) as part of every order, and quality control releases it against its specification. Our page on supplement testing and batch release sets out the full approach.
Selling UK-certified organic supplements in the EU and US
A UK-certified organic supplement can be sold as organic well beyond the UK. As of October 2026:
- EU: the UK and the EU accept each other's organic rules as equivalent, so a product certified and made in Great Britain can be sold as organic in the EU, with an EU certificate of inspection, approved by the control body, for each consignment.
- Northern Ireland: EU organic rules apply there, and we prepare each consignment from Great Britain to match.
- US: products certified under the UK programme and produced or finally processed in the UK can be sold as organic in the US under the US-UK organic equivalence arrangement. Each shipment needs an NOP Import Certificate from the UK certifier, and labels follow US rules.
Organic certification opens retail and online listings that ask for a certified claim. We prepare products and documents for the UK, the EU and the US, and our clients sell across Europe, the USA and Mexico.
Certification before your first organic batch, and export papers
We arrange organic certification for your product before the first organic batch. You receive a formula, a facility and a file ready for inspection.
- Brief. Formats, markets and the organic wording you want, with the 95% route confirmed for each market.
- Formula. Organic ingredients with current certificates, permitted additives only, and nutrients from organic foods for UK and EU products.
- Site controls. Organic materials stored apart and labelled, cleaning before organic runs, continuous runs, an organic register and a mass balance for every organic lot.
- Certification. We apply to the control body, which approves your recipe and label and inspects our facility; the certificate covers our processing of your product.
- Export documents. EU certificates of inspection and US import certificates arranged with the control body for each shipment.
- Every batch. Released by quality control against its specification, with three retained samples kept for the product's shelf life plus one year.
British VitaTech is ISO 9001, HACCP and GMP certified by BSI, and FDA registered, and our quality and accreditations page sets out each scope. For US launches, we are an FDA registered food facility for dietary supplements. Our status: BRCGS implementation under way, certification expected in early 2027, as our guide to BRCGS certification explains. Our traceability runs a full mock recall, forward and backward, with mass balance in seconds: the kind of evidence an organic inspection checks. For a plant-based range, organic certification and vegan registration can run together; see vegan supplement manufacturing. Start your project with your formats and target markets.

Questions brands ask
Is British VitaTech organic certified?
Organic certification is arranged for your product rather than held as a standing credential. Before your first organic batch, we put certification of our Leicester site in place for your programme with an approved UK control body, such as Soil Association Certification, and your brand registers as the business that sells the product. The control body approves each recipe and label and inspects us at least once a year.
What percentage of ingredients must be organic?
At least 95% of the agricultural ingredients, by weight, for 'organic' in the product name in the UK and the EU, as of October 2026; below that, 'organic' may appear only in the ingredients list. In the US, 'organic' needs at least 95% organic ingredients excluding water and salt, '100 percent organic' needs all of them, and 'made with organic' followed by named ingredients needs at least 70%.
Can an organic supplement contain added vitamins and minerals?
Not in the UK or the EU, as of October 2026. Organic rules there allow added vitamins, minerals, amino acids and micronutrients only where the law requires them in that food, as in infant formula, and no law requires them in a food supplement. Organic formulas take their nutrients from organic foods and plants instead, such as acerola for vitamin C. US organic rules list nutrient vitamins and minerals, so US formulas can differ.
Can organic capsules and tablets use magnesium stearate?
Not under GB organic rules, where magnesium stearate is absent from the list of permitted additives, and in the US only in products labelled 'made with organic', as of October 2026. Organic capsules use HPMC shells, which GB rules authorise as encapsulation material, with plant-based flow agents such as organic rice concentrate. Glycerol must be plant-derived and organic, and silicon dioxide is limited to dried herbs, spices, flavourings and propolis.
Can we sell a UK-made organic supplement in the EU and the US?
Yes, as of October 2026. The UK and the EU accept each other's organic rules as equivalent, so a product certified and made in Great Britain can be sold as organic in the EU, with an EU certificate of inspection for each consignment, approved by the control body. The US-UK organic equivalence arrangement does the same for the US, with an NOP Import Certificate for each shipment from the UK certifier. Labels follow each market's rules.
How is organic different from clean label?
Organic is defined in law and audited, while 'clean label' has no legal definition in the UK, the EU or the US. An organic claim needs certified ingredients, permitted additives only, a certified brand and manufacturer, at least one inspection a year and the control body's code on the label. Clean label is a design approach. The two work together: an organic certificate for the claim and a short, recognisable ingredient list for the shopper.
