Magnesium for evening, calm, menopause and sports ranges
For brands' evening, calm, menopause and sports ranges, our work as a magnesium supplement manufacturer covers custom magnesium capsules, tablets, gummies, powders, stick packs and liquids, made in-house in the UK from the first formula to the finished pack. We specify the form and grade, from bisglycinate and citrate to oxide and L-threonate, and set the dose per market. Every batch is tested by accredited partner laboratories and comes with a certificate of analysis and a batch release confirmation. Magnesium sits within our sleep, stress and mood supplement manufacturing. Your formula is yours.
The form sets the magnesium per gram, the taste and the behaviour in the pack. In GB and the EU it must also be a permitted form, and both lists include bisglycinate, citrate, malate, oxide, taurate, chloride and L-threonate.
| Form | Magnesium by weight | Formulation notes |
|---|---|---|
| Magnesium oxide | About 60% | Most magnesium per gram, so a full dose fits one capsule in dense grades; barely dissolves in drinks |
| Magnesium citrate | About 16% anhydrous; about 12% as the nonahydrate | Dissolves well; sour and bitter at high doses; the base of most drink powders |
| Magnesium bisglycinate | About 14% fully reacted | Milder taste; buffered grades blended with oxide read higher, so we specify which |
| Magnesium malate | About 15% anhydrous; lower as hydrates | Moderate dose per gram; suits capsules and powders |
| Magnesium taurate | About 9% | Bulky; several capsules for a modest dose |
| Magnesium L-threonate | 7.2% to 8.3% (EU specification) | Adults only, up to 250 mg a day; at about 8% magnesium, bulky in capsules |
| Magnesium chloride | About 12% as the hexahydrate | Very soluble and strongly hygroscopic; bitter; suits liquids and topical products |
The percentages come from each compound's formula and IUPAC atomic weights. Hydrates carry less magnesium, so we calculate every label value from the exact grade on the certificate of analysis. Ask any magnesium glycinate manufacturer whether a grade is fully reacted or buffered with oxide: the label and the taste must match the grade.
Upper levels, absorption and the bitterness of magnesium salts
Dose and the upper level
GB and EU labels state magnesium against a nutrient reference value of 375 mg, and US labels against a Daily Value of 420 mg. The EU's tolerable upper level for supplemental magnesium is 250 mg a day for everyone aged four and over, and the US upper level is 350 mg a day for adults. Both rest on a laxative effect: unabsorbed magnesium salts draw water into the gut by osmosis (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, 2026). Great Britain sets no maximum amount for minerals in food supplements, and in the EU maximum amounts are set nationally.
So we set the dose per market and split higher doses into morning and evening servings. The authorised claims need at least a source of magnesium: 15% of the nutrient reference value, about 56 mg, in the daily dose.
Soluble salts, oxide and L-threonate
Soluble forms are more completely absorbed: small studies found citrate, aspartate, lactate and chloride absorbed more completely than oxide and sulphate (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, 2026). For L-threonate, EFSA concluded that magnesium from it is bioavailable (EFSA, 2024). In a 21-day randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 80 adults aged 35 to 55 with self-reported sleep problems, 1 g a day of magnesium L-threonate, about 72 to 83 mg of magnesium, improved deep and REM sleep scores measured by a wearable ring (Hausenblas and colleagues, Sleep Medicine: X, 2024). No authorised claim links magnesium to sleep in GB or the EU, so evidence like this guides formulation, not label wording.
Medicines and high-dose zinc
Magnesium binds some medicines in the gut, including certain antibiotics and bisphosphonates, and US guidance advises taking them some hours apart (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, 2026). Within a formula, very high zinc intakes, around 142 mg a day, interfere with magnesium absorption, so zinc and magnesium blends keep zinc at nutritional doses.
Moisture, sour citrate and chalky oxide
Magnesium itself does not degrade, so stability work centres on water and taste. Magnesium chloride and anhydrous citrate attract moisture, which cakes powders and hardens stick packs. HPMC capsule shells carry 4% to 6% moisture against 13% to 16% for gelatine, which makes them the better fit for hygroscopic fills (Al-Tabakha, 2010). We set humidity limits for production and confirm the pack with stability studies.
Taste is the harder problem: citrate is sour and bitter, soluble salts turn bitter at high doses, bisglycinate is milder, and oxide reads as chalky in a drink. Our flavour and taste masking work sets the flavour system with the mineral dose, not after it. In effervescent powders, magnesium carbonate and citric acid react in water to form magnesium citrate and carbon dioxide.
Private label magnesium, sized from one capsule to a full scoop
In private label magnesium, the dose decides the format.
- Capsules: a size 00 capsule holds just under 1 ml (UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy). Dense magnesium oxide fits a full 375 mg in one capsule, while 200 mg from bisglycinate means about 1.4 g of salt, or two to three capsules; see capsule and tablet manufacturing.
- Tablets: we make high-dose and effervescent magnesium tablets in-house.
- Powders and drink mixes: a scoop carries the full reference value, about 2.3 g of magnesium citrate or 2.7 g of bisglycinate; see powder supplement manufacturing.
- Stick packs: one exact evening dose for a glass of water; see sachet and stick pack manufacturing.
- Gummies: as a magnesium gummies manufacturer, we make them in-house, with an active assay on every batch. A gummy carries part of the reference value: 100 mg of magnesium from citrate is about 0.6 g of salt before the gelling agent, sweetener, acid and flavour; see gummy manufacturing.
- Liquids: drops and shots made in-house with soluble salts such as chloride or citrate.
- Topical products: magnesium lotions, sprays and bath products are cosmetics, made in our facility, which is ISO 9001 certified by BSI; see skincare and cosmetic manufacturing. A review judged the case for transdermal magnesium scientifically unsupported (Gröber and colleagues, Nutrients, 2017), so topical products make cosmetic claims only.
We make every format in our UK facility, which is ISO 9001, HACCP and GMP certified by BSI, and FDA registered; capsules, gummies and liquids are GMP certified.
Packs follow the salt. Capsules and tablets go into HDPE bottles with induction seals, with desiccants for hygroscopic fills, or into blisters. Powders go into tubs with induction seals and scoops sized to the bulk density of the blend, and stick packs into foil-laminate film, the highest moisture barrier. Gummies go into bottles or jars with desiccants, or resealable high-barrier pouches. Stability in the final pack confirms each choice.
Working to label tolerance as a magnesium supplement manufacturer
- Specify. We set the form, grade, magnesium target and label tolerance with you. EU tolerance guidance accepts minerals from 20% below to 45% above the declared value, including measurement uncertainty; US labels need at least the declared amount.
- Source. Every magnesium salt comes from a supplier that has passed our supplier approval, reviewed annually, with a certificate of analysis stating its magnesium content.
- Weigh and blend. Materials are weighed against the batch record, within the humidity limits set for the product, under our allergen management plan with yellow colour coding, then blended and checked for uniformity.
- Fill or form. Capsules are filled and checked by weight; tablets are compressed and checked for weight, hardness and disintegration; powders are filled by weight into tubs or sealed into stick packs; gummies are cooked, deposited with piece weights checked through the run, and dried to their target water activity.
- Label and release. Label verification on every batch is the critical control point in our HACCP plan, and every batch is released by quality control against its specification.
Every formula runs through our development stages before the first production batch: brief, evidence review, formulation, bench samples, blind sensory panels, a pilot batch on production equipment, stability in the final pack, and scale-up. Each stage leaves a record you keep.
Ten magnesium claims, none of them for sleep
GB and EU claims and L-threonate rules
As of October 2026, magnesium carries ten authorised claims on the GB nutrition and health claims register and the EU register, each for a product that is at least a source of magnesium. Those used most in this category are:
- "Magnesium contributes to normal psychological function"
- "Magnesium contributes to normal functioning of the nervous system"
- "Magnesium contributes to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue"
- "Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function"
- "Magnesium contributes to electrolyte balance"
The other five cover energy-yielding metabolism, protein synthesis, bones, teeth and cell division. None mentions sleep or relaxation. In calm formulas, magnesium carries the claims beside ashwagandha or saffron, which have no authorised claim of their own.
Magnesium L-threonate is permitted in GB and the EU in food supplements for adults, excluding pregnant and lactating women, at up to 250 mg of magnesium a day, the intake EFSA assessed, with a label statement. Only the applicant's material can be used until 7 November 2029 in the EU and March 2031 in GB, so we source it from that supplier. At about 8% magnesium, the full 250 mg is about 3 g of the salt, which suits a powder or stick pack better than capsules. We check every label claim against the register at artwork stage, and our claims and regulation page explains how.
US Daily Value and structure and function claims
As of October 2026, magnesium sells as a dietary supplement, with Supplement Facts declaring a percentage of the 420 mg Daily Value and at least the declared amount present. Structure and function claims, such as "supports muscle function" or "supports relaxation", need FDA's disclaimer, a notification to FDA and competent and reliable scientific evidence.
Magnesium assays at release and across shelf life
Ask how the magnesium on the label is proved. Every batch is tested by accredited partner laboratories (ISO/IEC 17025) as part of every order, to a programme set per product and market:
- Magnesium assay: by ICP-OES or complexometric titration, at release and across shelf life.
- Identity: confirming the salt and the grade against the specification and the supplier's certificate of analysis before any material is used.
- Heavy metals and microbiology: lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic by ICP-MS, with total viable count, yeasts and moulds.
- Moisture, disintegration and stability: water activity for powders and gummies, disintegration for capsules and tablets, and magnesium content, caking and taste tracked in the final pack.
Our quality system adds a HACCP study per product type, reviewed annually; three retained samples per batch, kept for shelf life plus one year; and a full mock recall, forward and backward with mass balance, in seconds. Nothing is dispatched without quality control sign-off. Our testing and batch release page sets out the full approach.
Every batch comes with a certificate of analysis and a batch release confirmation against the agreed specification. Development adds the formula, the specification with its test methods, the process summary, stability data and a claims review for each market.
Research and development is a paid stage that can be included with an order of the right size. Start your project with your target markets, and we will propose the form, the dose per serving and the claims route.

Questions brands ask
Which form of magnesium should we use?
The form follows the format, the dose and the taste. Magnesium oxide is about 60% magnesium, so a full dose fits one capsule in a dense grade, but it barely dissolves. Bisglycinate, about 14% magnesium when fully reacted, tastes milder in powders and gummies, and citrate dissolves well in drinks. L-threonate, at 7.2% to 8.3% magnesium, is authorised for adults only. We set the form with you at concept stage and calculate every label value from the exact grade.
How much magnesium can a supplement contain?
It depends on the market. The EU's tolerable upper level for supplemental magnesium is 250 mg a day, set on its laxative effect, and the US upper level is 350 mg a day for adults. As of October 2026, Great Britain sets no maximum amount, and EU maximum amounts are set nationally and are under review. So we set the dose per market, split higher doses into morning and evening servings, and design EU formulas that can step down without a change of format.
Can a magnesium supplement claim to help sleep?
Not in GB or the EU: no authorised claim links magnesium to sleep, and the only authorised claim about sleep belongs to melatonin. Magnesium carries ten authorised claims, including normal psychological function, normal functioning of the nervous system and a reduction of tiredness and fatigue, each for a product with at least 15% of the nutrient reference value in the daily dose. In the US, structure and function claims such as "supports relaxation" need FDA's disclaimer and evidence.
Do you make magnesium gummies?
Yes. We make magnesium gummies in-house; they are GMP certified, with an active assay on every batch as standard. A gummy carries part of the nutrient reference value per serving: 100 mg of magnesium from citrate is about 0.6 g of salt before the gelling agent, sweetener, acid and flavour. We choose milder forms such as bisglycinate, mask the bitterness of the salts and set the serving count honestly at concept stage, so the label dose and the taste both work.
Can we use magnesium L-threonate?
Yes, within its conditions. As of October 2026, GB and the EU permit it in food supplements for adults, excluding pregnant and lactating women, at up to 250 mg of magnesium a day, with a label statement. Only the applicant's material can be used until 7 November 2029 in the EU and March 2031 in GB, so we source it from that supplier. At about 8% magnesium, the full dose is about 3 g of the salt, so it suits powders and stick packs.
Can you make topical magnesium products?
Yes, as cosmetics. We make magnesium lotions, sprays and bath products in our UK facility, which is ISO 9001 certified by BSI, with cosmetic claims, such as how the product feels on the skin. A review judged the case for transdermal magnesium scientifically unsupported (Gröber and colleagues, 2017), so a topical product cannot promise the effects of a supplement, and we keep its claims and its label within cosmetics law.
