Evening magnesium, saffron mood formulas and calming drinks

Private label sleep supplements, stress formulas and mood products for brands are each a custom product, taken from the first formula to the finished pack. In our Leicester facility we make evening magnesium formulas, calm and focus products, saffron mood formulas, calming drink mixes, relaxation drinks and gut-brain products, as capsules, tablets, gummies, powders, stick packs, liquids and functional pouches. Every batch is tested by accredited partner laboratories and comes with a certificate of analysis, and the brand owns the formula.

Mental wellness grew 12.4% a year over five years, the second-largest gain of any sector in the global wellness economy (Global Wellness Institute, November 2025).

Calm focus to gut-brain blends, and the case for bespoke

Brands are building five main product types in this category.

  • Evening magnesium formulas. Magnesium bisglycinate, citrate or L-threonate, often with vitamin B6, in capsules, powders and gummies. Both nutrients carry authorised claims for normal psychological function and for the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. See magnesium supplement manufacturing.
  • Calm and focus products. L-theanine alone or with B vitamins, in capsules, gummies, drinks and functional pouches.
  • Mood formulas. Saffron extract with B vitamins and vitamin C, which carry the psychological function claim that saffron lacks.
  • Calming drink mixes and relaxation drinks. Evening powders and stick packs built on magnesium, glycine and tart cherry, and ready-to-drink relaxation drinks, all made in Leicester.
  • Gut-brain products. Probiotic and fibre formulas positioned for mental wellbeing; see gut health supplement manufacturing. No probiotic claim is authorised in GB or the EU, so these products pair their cultures with nutrients that carry claims.

Private label sleep supplements often start as a catalogue formula with a new label. A bespoke formula gives a brand nutrient doses that meet the claim conditions, actives with a clear legal status in every target market, and a specification no catalogue offers. Your formula is yours. Research and development is a paid stage that can be included with an order of the right size.

Every project runs through the same development stages: brief, evidence review, formulation, bench samples, blind sensory panels, a pilot batch on production equipment, stability in the final pack, and scale-up into routine production. Each stage leaves a record you keep.

Magnesium, saffron, ashwagandha and their status in each market

We specify every active by form, grade and dose against the claim it has to carry and the status it holds in each market, using the GB and EU registers and the European Commission's novel food catalogue as of October 2026. Ashwagandha and saffron pages will join magnesium in our supplement categories.

Magnesium

Magnesium anchors the category because its authorised claims fit it: "Magnesium contributes to normal psychological function", "Magnesium contributes to normal functioning of the nervous system" and "Magnesium contributes to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue". Each needs at least a source of magnesium, 15% of the 375 mg nutrient reference value, in the daily dose. Magnesium L-threonate is a permitted source for adults, excluding pregnant and lactating women, in the EU and Great Britain, and only the applicant's material can be used until 7 November 2029 in the EU and until March 2031 in Great Britain.

B vitamins and vitamin C

Vitamins B6, B12 and C, niacin, thiamine, folate and biotin each carry the same claim, for example "Vitamin B6 contributes to normal psychological function", for food that is at least a source of the vitamin, and each also carries a nervous system claim, a tiredness and fatigue claim, or both. They let a mood or calm formula carry authorised wording when its botanicals cannot.

L-theanine

L-theanine, the amino acid found in tea, is a standard calm and focus active. L-theanine as an ingredient was up 53% so far in 2026, across supplements and beverages (SPINS, via New Hope Network, July 2026). In the EU it is not novel only when extracted from green tea and used in food supplements; other sources, and other foods, need authorisation (European Commission, novel food catalogue). It carries no authorised claim, so products pair it with nutrients that do.

Saffron

Saffron extract is dosed in milligrams, so it fits a small capsule, a gummy or a drop. Extracts are specified by their crocins and safranal, the compounds behind saffron's colour and aroma. Saffron carries no authorised claim in GB or the EU.

Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha root extract is sold for stress and calm positioning, and its status differs by market, as the panel on this page shows. We specify root-only extracts by their withanolide content, confirm the plant part on every lot and set label cautions for each market.

Melatonin

Melatonin cannot go into a UK food supplement, because it is a prescription-only medicine there. In the EU, each member state decides whether a melatonin product is a food supplement or a medicine, and in the US it sells as a dietary supplement.

Melatonin is a prescription-only medicine in the UK, so we don't make it for UK sale; export-only projects are considered case by case, subject to UK licensing.

Glycine, tart cherry, GABA and apigenin

Glycine is an amino acid used at gram doses, so it suits powders and stick packs rather than capsules, subject to each market's rules on amino acids in food supplements. Tart cherry comes as juice concentrate or powder and adds colour, flavour and a food-first story. Neither carries an authorised claim. In the EU, GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is not authorised as a novel food, and apigenin purified from chamomile to 98% or more is novel and needs an authorisation first (NutraIngredients, January 2026), so our EU formulas leave both out.

Adaptogens and newer botanicals

Rhodiola root is not novel in food supplements in the EU (European Commission, novel food catalogue), and it often sits beside ashwagandha in stress blends. Newer botanicals, such as Aframomum melegueta seed extract from the West African spice known as grains of paradise, are specified by plant part and extract type. Botanical claims remain on hold in the EU, so these products rely on nutrients for their authorised wording.

Evening formats for private label sleep supplements

The format follows the dose and the moment of use, which in this category is often the evening.

  • Capsules carry milligram actives such as saffron, ashwagandha root extract and L-theanine, and part doses of magnesium. We make capsules and tablets in-house; see capsule and tablet manufacturing.
  • Gummies suit L-theanine, saffron, B vitamins and modest magnesium doses, with an active assay on every batch; see gummy manufacturing.
  • Powders, drink mixes and stick packs carry gram doses of magnesium, glycine and tart cherry for an evening drink, made in Leicester; see powder supplement manufacturing.
  • Liquids cover drops, tinctures, shots and ready-to-drink relaxation drinks, all made in-house; see liquid supplement manufacturing.
  • Functional pouches release L-theanine and B vitamins in the mouth over a session, with no water.

We make every format in our Leicester facility, which is ISO 9001, HACCP and GMP certified by BSI, and FDA registered; capsules, gummies, pouches and liquids are GMP certified. Magnesium salts, saffron and botanical extracts taste bitter or sharp at working doses, so they go through our flavour development and taste masking before launch.

Six steps from active specification to release

  1. Specify. We fix each active's form, grade and dose against its claim and its status in each market: magnesium by salt and elemental content, ashwagandha by plant part and withanolides, saffron by crocins and safranal.
  2. Source and verify. Every material comes from an approved supplier, and each lot's certificate of analysis is checked against our specification, with botanical identity confirmed on receipt.
  3. Weigh and blend. Materials are weighed against the batch record under our allergen management plan, with yellow colour coding, then blended and checked for uniformity, with humidity limits for hygroscopic magnesium salts and extracts.
  4. Fill or form. Capsules are filled and checked by weight, tablets compressed, gummies cooked, deposited and dried to their target water activity, and powders filled into tubs or sealed into stick packs.
  5. Pack. Each product goes into the pack its stability study approved: bottles with desiccant for capsules and hygroscopic magnesium salts, foil stick packs for single evening servings, and resealable pouches or tubs for drink mixes, each coded with its batch number and best-before date.
  6. Label and release. Label verification on every batch is the critical control point in our HACCP plan, and quality control releases every batch against its specification.

Assays for magnesium, withanolides and saffron markers

Every batch is tested by accredited partner laboratories (ISO/IEC 17025) as part of every order. The panel, set for each product and market, covers the actives, such as elemental magnesium, L-theanine, withanolides and saffron's crocins and safranal, plus heavy metals by ICP-MS and microbiology. Every new formula goes through accelerated and real-time stability studies, which set its shelf life and overages. Every batch comes with a certificate of analysis and a batch release confirmation, and development adds the formula, the specification, stability data and a claims review for each market.

Magnesium and B vitamin claims, market by market

Claims follow the register, not the trend. The table sets out the position as of October 2026, from the GB nutrition and health claims register, the EU register and US law.

Market Claims you can use What to avoid
Great Britain "Magnesium contributes to normal psychological function", "Magnesium contributes to normal functioning of the nervous system" and "Magnesium contributes to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue"; the same psychological function claim for vitamins B6, B12 and C, niacin, thiamine, folate and biotin. Each needs at least a source of the nutrient. Melatonin's claims: they are on the register, but melatonin is a prescription-only medicine in the UK. Claims for L-theanine, saffron, GABA or glycine, which have none authorised. Medicinal claims of any kind.
European Union The same nutrient claims. Where a member state allows melatonin in food supplements, its two authorised claims apply: one for the time taken to fall asleep, at 1 mg per portion taken close to bedtime, and one for jet lag, from 0.5 mg. Stress, calm or mood claims for botanicals, which stay on hold, and claims for actives with no authorised claim.
United States Structure and function claims, such as "supports relaxation" or "supports restful sleep", backed by competent and reliable scientific evidence, notified to FDA and carrying FDA's standard disclaimer. Drug claims, including claims that a product replaces a medicine.

One formula can serve all three markets if it is built for them from the start: nutrients at the doses their GB and EU claims need, an evidence file for US structure and function claims, and label copy for each market. Start your project with your target markets, and we build the formula and the claims plan together.

Two open reviews: ashwagandha safety and EU maximum levels

As of October 2026, two open reviews matter for sleep, stress and mood formulas, and we plan around both. We review each line every quarter, and our regulation watch tracks the detail.

  • Ashwagandha. Its safety is under review in the UK, so every ashwagandha formula we develop has a ready alternative active and the label changes mapped for each market.
  • EU vitamin and mineral limits. EU maximum levels for vitamins and minerals in food supplements are under review, so we design EU magnesium and vitamin B6 doses with a ready alternative.

Questions brands ask

Can you make private label sleep supplements?

Yes. We develop bespoke formulas rather than relabelling stock products, so a brand gets nutrient doses that meet the claim conditions, actives with a clear status in each target market and a format its customers use every evening. We make capsules, tablets, gummies, powders, stick packs, liquids and functional pouches in Leicester. Research and development is a paid stage that can be included with an order of the right size, and your formula is yours.

Which claims can a sleep or stress supplement make in the UK and EU?

Nutrient claims carry most products. Magnesium, vitamins B6, B12 and C, niacin, thiamine, folate and biotin each carry the claim that the nutrient "contributes to normal psychological function", and several also contribute to normal functioning of the nervous system or to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, each for food that is at least a source of the nutrient. The only authorised claim about sleep belongs to melatonin, for 1 mg taken close to bedtime, and melatonin is prescription-only in the UK.

Can melatonin go into a supplement?

It depends on the market. Melatonin cannot go into a UK food supplement, because it is a prescription-only medicine there. In the EU, each member state decides whether a melatonin product is a food supplement or a medicine; France, for example, allows food supplements providing less than 2 mg a day. In the US it sells as a dietary supplement, with structure and function claims only.

Can ashwagandha still be sold?

Yes. As of October 2026, ashwagandha can be sold in food supplements in the UK, no EU-wide rule restricts it, and it sells as a dietary supplement in the US. Denmark does not allow products containing it. Its safety is under review in the UK, so we use root-only extracts specified by withanolide content and build every ashwagandha formula with a ready alternative active.

Which format suits a sleep or stress supplement?

The format follows the dose and the moment of use. Milligram actives such as saffron, L-theanine and ashwagandha suit capsules and gummies; gram doses of magnesium and glycine suit evening powders and stick packs; drops and shots suit liquids; and L-theanine also suits functional pouches. We make every format in our Leicester facility, which is ISO 9001, HACCP and GMP certified by BSI, and capsules, gummies, pouches and liquids are GMP certified.

Can we use GABA, saffron or other newer actives?

Yes, where each market allows them. Saffron extract suits capsules, gummies and drops at milligram doses, specified by its crocins and safranal. In the EU, GABA is not authorised as a novel food and apigenin purified from chamomile to 98% or more is novel, so our EU formulas leave both out, while L-theanine extracted from green tea is not novel in food supplements. We screen every active against the novel food registers for each target market before formulation.

How do you test sleep and stress supplements?

Every batch is tested by accredited partner laboratories (ISO/IEC 17025) as part of every order. The panel, set for each product and market, covers the actives, such as elemental magnesium, L-theanine, withanolides and saffron's crocins and safranal, plus heavy metals by ICP-MS and microbiology, and gummies get an active assay on every batch. Every new formula goes through accelerated and real-time stability studies, which set its shelf life, and every batch comes with a certificate of analysis and a batch release confirmation.
