L-ergothioneine capsules, gummies and shots for UK, EU and US brands
Whether a premium brand sells in the UK, the EU or the US, we can act as its ergothioneine supplement manufacturer, taking custom L-ergothioneine supplements from formulation to finished product in our own facility. We make capsules, tablets, gummies, powders, sachets, stick packs, liquids and shots. Doses run from 5 to 25 mg a day, the range the human studies use, within the authorised 30 mg a day for adults in the UK and the EU. UK and EU products use the authorised grade, of at least 99.5% purity by HPLC. Every batch is tested by accredited partner laboratories, including content uniformity across units, and comes with a certificate of analysis. Your formula is yours.
Ergothioneine is a sulphur-containing derivative of the amino acid histidine, made by fungi, certain yeasts and some bacteria. Humans and plants do not make it, so it comes from the diet, mainly from mushrooms, and the body takes it up through SLC22A4, a transporter that is highly selective for it (Borodina and colleagues, 2020). It belongs to our healthy ageing and longevity supplement manufacturing.
We specify ergothioneine by source and grade for each market.
| Source | What it is | Where we use it, as of October 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Synthetic L-ergothioneine | The grade the UK and EU authorisation was granted for: a white powder of at least 99.5% purity by HPLC | UK, EU and US products |
| Fermentation-made L-ergothioneine | Made by engineered microorganisms; FDA had no questions about GRAS notices for two such ingredients | US products |
| Mushroom fruiting-body powders | Edible mushrooms with a long history of food use: oyster mushrooms carry up to 4 mg of ergothioneine per gram of dry matter and button mushrooms about 0.4 mg (Borodina and colleagues, 2020) | Whole-food formulas, specified by ergothioneine assay |
The UK and EU authorisation sets the specification for the ingredient: purity of at least 99.5% by HPLC, total impurities below 0.8%, and limits for lead, cadmium, mercury, residual solvents and microbes (European Commission, 2017). Every lot for UK and EU products comes with a certificate of analysis against that specification. Mushroom powders deliver ergothioneine with the rest of the mushroom, at levels that differ by species, so we specify them by assay rather than by weight and set the dose from the measured content. We use fruiting-body powders, because mycelium powder of some species, oyster mushroom among them, is a novel food in the EU.
Dose accuracy, not absorption, is the ergothioneine challenge
Inside the 30 mg authorised limit
In the UK and the EU, food supplements may provide up to 30 mg of L-ergothioneine a day for adults and up to 20 mg a day for children older than 3; the authorisation does not cover pregnant or lactating women or younger children, and the label names the ingredient "L-ergothioneine". The human studies sit inside that limit. In 147 adults aged 55 to 79, 10 or 25 mg a day raised plasma ergothioneine about 16-fold by the end of the trial at the higher dose (Zajac and colleagues, 2025). In 80 healthy women, 25 mg a day from tablets of an ergothioneine-rich oyster mushroom raised plasma levels 4.7-fold (Hanayama and colleagues, 2024). We build adult products within the authorised 30 mg a day, at the 5 to 25 mg a day used in human studies.
A transporter of its own
Formulation work on ergothioneine centres on dose accuracy and stability, not absorption. Its own transporter, SLC22A4, takes it up, and the body holds on to it: in volunteers given 5 to 25 mg a day, less than 4% appeared in the urine, and ergothioneine is metabolised and excreted only slowly (Borodina and colleagues, 2020). Blood levels therefore build with regular intake, which suits a once-daily unit.
Unusually stable for a thiol
Ergothioneine is unusually stable for a thiol. At physiological pH it exists mainly as the thione tautomer, which makes it resistant to autoxidation, unlike glutathione and other typical thiols; it is stable to extremes of pH, and the anhydrous powder decomposes only at 275 to 276°C (Borodina and colleagues, 2020). That makes it a forgiving active for gummies, acidic drinks and powders. We still run accelerated and real-time stability studies on every new formula in the final pack, because the other ingredients and the pack set the shelf life.
Low-dose blending
At 5 to 30 mg a day, ergothioneine is a small part of each capsule, tablet or gummy, so dose accuracy is the main manufacturing challenge. We pre-blend it with a carrier by stepwise dilution before the main blend, check blend uniformity before filling and test content uniformity in the finished units. Gummies get the active added at a controlled point in cooking and an active assay on every batch.
Pairing with NAD+ precursors, vitamin C or selenium
Ergothioneine often sits with NAD+ precursors, covered on our NAD+ and NMN supplement manufacturing page; with urolithin A in US products, covered on our urolithin A supplement manufacturing page; and with vitamin C or selenium, which carry authorised claims. Brands also ask us for it in muscle health formulas. Each active keeps its own conditions, and we check every combination for the total daily dose and each active's status in each market.
Novel food limits in GB and the EU, GRAS notices in the US
As of October 2026, ergothioneine can be sold in the UK, the EU and the US, within each market's conditions. No authorised claim refers to ergothioneine, so label claims come from the nutrients beside it. We design every formula to the rules of the markets you sell in.
- Great Britain and the EU: L-ergothioneine is an authorised novel food at up to 30 mg a day in food supplements for adults, excluding pregnant and lactating women, and 20 mg a day for children older than 3, labelled "L-ergothioneine" (see the FSA's register entry). UK and EU products use material that meets the authorised specification. Claims come from authorised nutrients in exact wording, such as "Vitamin C contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress" for a product that is at least a source of vitamin C.
- United States: FDA has had no questions about GRAS notices for L-ergothioneine in foods such as drinks, protein powders and bars, including fermentation-made L-ergothioneine. In supplements, the new dietary ingredient rules apply, and we document the route for every product. Structure and function claims need competent and reliable scientific evidence, a notification to FDA and FDA's standard disclaimer.
The "where it can be sold" panel on this page is dated and reviewed every quarter. Our supplement regulation watch and claims and regulation guide cover the rules in more depth.
A stable active for ergothioneine gummies, acidic shots and capsules
As an ergothioneine supplement manufacturer, we make every format in our UK facility, which is ISO 9001, HACCP and GMP certified by BSI, and FDA registered.
- Capsules: a pre-blended dose in HPMC or gelatine shells, GMP certified. See capsule and tablet manufacturing.
- Tablets: ergothioneine with vitamins, minerals or NAD+ precursors in one daily unit.
- Gummies: a stable active that holds through cooking and depositing, GMP certified, with an active assay on every batch as standard.
- Powders, sachets and stick packs: drink mixes and shakes, with the dose pre-blended so every serving carries it evenly.
- Liquids and shots: stable across acidic pH, GMP certified, with shelf life set by real-time stability in the final pack.
The UK and EU authorisation also covers some foods, such as alcohol-free beverages, cereal bars and chocolate confectionery, at set maximum levels, which opens functional drinks and bars as well as supplements. We develop each one from the format your customers use every day, then set the grade, the dose per serving and the pack.
Ergothioneine pre-blended by stepwise dilution before filling
- Specify. We set the source, grade, dose, format, markets and claims with you.
- Source. Ergothioneine comes from a supplier that has passed our supplier approval, reviewed annually, with a certificate of analysis for each lot; UK and EU lots meet the authorised specification. We confirm each lot's identity before use.
- Pre-blend. The active is weighed against the batch record and diluted stepwise with a carrier, under our allergen management plan with yellow colour coding.
- Blend and check. The pre-blend goes into the main blend, and blend uniformity is checked before filling.
- Fill or form. Capsules are filled and checked by weight, tablets compressed, gummies cooked and deposited, and powders sealed into sachets or stick packs.
- Label and release. Label verification on every batch is the critical control point in our HACCP plan, and quality control releases every batch against its specification.
Is 25 mg in every unit? Ask your ergothioneine supplement manufacturer
Ask how a 25 mg dose is proved in every unit. Every batch is tested by accredited partner laboratories (ISO/IEC 17025) as part of every order, to a specification set per product and market:
- Identity and assay: L-ergothioneine by HPLC at release and across shelf life, with content uniformity across units.
- Ingredient purity: for UK and EU products, each lot against the authorised specification, including at least 99.5% by HPLC and total impurities below 0.8%.
- Contaminants: lead, cadmium and mercury against the specification and the GB and EU maximum levels for food supplements, plus residual solvents.
- Microbiology and water: total viable count, yeasts and moulds, and E. coli, with water activity for gummies.
With every batch, you receive a certificate of analysis against the agreed specification, and the product file holds the specification, the stability data and the label review for each market. Our quality system adds a HACCP study per product type, reviewed annually; three retained samples per batch, kept for shelf life plus one year; and a full mock recall, forward and backward with mass balance, in seconds. Nothing is dispatched without quality control sign-off, and our testing and batch release page sets out the approach.
Research and development is a paid stage that can be included with an order of the right size. Start your project with your target markets, and we will recommend the grade, the format and the dose for each.

Questions brands ask
Is ergothioneine allowed in UK and EU supplements?
Yes: as of October 2026, L-ergothioneine is an authorised novel food in the UK and the EU. Food supplements may provide up to 30 mg a day for adults, excluding pregnant and lactating women, and 20 mg a day for children older than 3, and the label names it "L-ergothioneine". The authorisation was granted for synthetic L-ergothioneine of at least 99.5% purity, so we specify UK and EU material to that grade.
Can ergothioneine be sold in the US?
Yes. As of October 2026, FDA has had no questions about GRAS notices for L-ergothioneine in foods such as drinks, protein powders and bars, including fermentation-made grades. In supplements, the new dietary ingredient rules apply, so we document the route for every product. Claims follow structure and function rules, with competent and reliable scientific evidence, a notification to FDA and FDA's standard disclaimer.
What dose of ergothioneine do the studies use?
Human studies use 5 to 25 mg a day, inside the UK and EU maximum of 30 mg a day for adults. In 147 adults aged 55 to 79, 25 mg a day raised plasma ergothioneine about 16-fold by the end of the trial, and in 80 healthy women, 25 mg a day from an ergothioneine-rich oyster mushroom raised plasma levels 4.7-fold. We build adult products in that range.
Which formats suit ergothioneine?
Almost every format, because ergothioneine is unusually stable for a thiol: it resists autoxidation and is stable at extremes of pH. We make it as capsules, tablets, gummies, powders, stick packs, liquids and shots in the UK. The main manufacturing challenge is dose accuracy, because 5 to 30 mg is a small part of each unit, so we pre-blend it by stepwise dilution and test content uniformity.
What claims can an ergothioneine supplement make?
As of October 2026, no authorised claim refers to ergothioneine in GB or the EU, so label claims come from the nutrients in the formula, such as "Vitamin C contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress" for a product that is at least a source of vitamin C. In the US, structure and function claims need competent and reliable scientific evidence, a notification to FDA and FDA's standard disclaimer.
Should we use pure ergothioneine or a mushroom powder?
Pure L-ergothioneine gives a set dose in a small fill, while mushroom powders give a whole-food story at variable strength. Oyster mushrooms carry up to 4 mg of ergothioneine per gram of dry matter and button mushrooms about 0.4 mg, so a mushroom formula needs far more powder per dose. We use fruiting-body powders, specify them by ergothioneine assay and set the serving from the measured content.
How do you test ergothioneine supplements?
Every batch is tested by accredited partner laboratories (ISO/IEC 17025) as part of every order. Tests cover L-ergothioneine by HPLC at release and across shelf life, content uniformity across units, each UK and EU lot against the authorised specification, lead, cadmium and mercury, residual solvents and microbiology, with water activity for gummies. Quality control releases every batch, and you receive a certificate of analysis with each one.
