Ubiquinone and ubiquinol supplements, with the grade chosen by format
Ubiquinone and ubiquinol supplements, custom-made for premium brands, are what we produce as a CoQ10 manufacturer in our UK facility, from formulation to finished product. We make softgels with CoQ10 dissolved in oil; capsules, tablets and chewables; gummies; liquids, shots and liposomal formats; and powders, sachets and stick packs. Each product is built on the grade its format needs and a dose that matches the studies, set per unit and per day with you. Every batch is tested by accredited partner laboratories, with ubiquinone and ubiquinol measured separately by HPLC, and comes with a certificate of analysis. Your formula is yours.
CoQ10 is a staple of healthy ageing ranges, and the category it sits in is growing: Nutrition Business Journal reports that healthy ageing was the fastest-growing US supplement condition in 2025, with sales up 14.3% (Nutrition Business Journal via Ingredients Network, 2026). CoQ10 belongs to our healthy ageing and longevity supplement manufacturing, and it pairs naturally with the precursors on our NAD+ and NMN supplement manufacturing page. Brands also pair it with urolithin A and build it into muscle health formulas.
CoQ10 exists in two forms that convert into each other. Ubiquinone is the oxidised form, a yellow or orange crystalline powder. Ubiquinol is the reduced form, which is inherently unstable and oxidises to ubiquinone (Mantle and Dybring, 2020). Supplemental CoQ10 is now made by yeast fermentation, which gives the trans form of the molecule rather than the cis form (Mantle and Dybring, 2020). Both forms are sold in food supplements (BfR, 2023), and we specify every grade by form, source, assay and contaminant limits.
| Grade | What it is | Where it fits | What we specify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ubiquinone powder | Crystalline, fermentation-made trans CoQ10 | Softgels, with the crystals dissolved in oil; capsules and tablets | Assay, trans form, related substances, residual solvents and metals |
| Ubiquinol | The reduced form, supplied stabilised | Softgels, sealed away from oxygen | Ubiquinol and ubiquinone content, the antioxidant system and oxygen-free handling |
| Water-dispersible CoQ10 | CoQ10 emulsified or carried on a food-grade carrier so it spreads through water | Gummies, chewable tablets, powders and stick packs | CoQ10 content, carrier identity and dispersion in the finished format |
| Micellised and liposomal concentrates | CoQ10 held in emulsifier micelles or phospholipid membranes | Clear liquids, shots and liposomal formats | CoQ10 content, droplet size and clarity across shelf life |
CoQ10 is not water-soluble, and no process makes it so: dispersible grades carry it through water rather than dissolve it (Mantle and Dybring, 2020). So we choose the grade by format first: oil for softgels, dispersible grades for gummies, powders and drinks.
CoQ10 starts from the format customers take every day
As a CoQ10 supplement manufacturer, we make every format in our UK facility, which is ISO 9001, HACCP and GMP certified by BSI, and FDA registered.
- Softgels: CoQ10 dissolved in a carrier oil inside a gelatine or plant-based shell, the natural home for ubiquinol and for CoQ10 with omega-3 or vitamin E. See softgel manufacturing.
- Capsules: dispersed ubiquinone or a dispersible grade in hard capsules, GMP certified. See capsule and tablet manufacturing.
- Tablets and chewables: dispersible grades compressed with vitamins and minerals in one daily unit.
- Gummies: a dispersible grade whose yellow-orange colour suits citrus flavours, GMP certified, with an active assay on every batch as standard.
- Liquids, shots and liposomal formats: micellised or liposomal CoQ10 in clear liquids, GMP certified. See liposomal supplement manufacturing.
- Powders, sachets and stick packs: a dispersible grade for drinks, sealed against oxygen and moisture.
Development starts from the format your customers take every day, then works back to the grade, the dose per unit and the pack.
Splitting the dose, dissolving the crystals, holding the form
Split doses and the 300 mg mark
Many clinical trials use 300 mg a day, and splitting the dose raises blood levels further: in a randomised trial in 60 healthy men, two doses of 100 mg raised serum CoQ10 more than a single 200 mg dose (Singh and colleagues, 2005). Germany's federal risk assessment institute, the BfR, notes that the effects of intakes above 300 mg a day have not been investigated and that interactions with some medicines are not yet fully assessed (BfR, 2023). We set the dose per unit and per day with you, split it across two units where that helps, and add a label advisory for people taking medicines.
Dissolving crystals before encapsulation
CoQ10 is fat-soluble, and the gut absorbs it slowly by way of the lymph: blood levels peak about 6 hours after a dose, and absorbed CoQ10 has a half-life of about 33 hours (Mantle and Dybring, 2020). Crystals are not absorbed: they must first be broken into single molecules (Mantle and Dybring, 2020). The formulation decides how much gets in. When 14 healthy adults took seven different 100 mg products in turn, absorption differed widely, and the carrier that dissolves the CoQ10 and any added preservatives shaped the result (López-Lluch and colleagues, 2019). So the preparation step matters as much as the dose: in softgels, we dissolve CoQ10 fully in the carrier oil and check the fill for undissolved crystals before encapsulation.
Once absorbed, CoQ10 circulates mainly as ubiquinol, because ubiquinone is reduced during absorption (Mantle and Dybring, 2020). In the same seven-product study, the two best absorbed were softgels, one of ubiquinone and one of ubiquinol (López-Lluch and colleagues, 2019). We choose the form on the finished product's absorption and stability data, not on the name.
Holding the declared form to the end of shelf life
Stability decides whether the label stays true. In a study of 11 commercial products, ubiquinone degraded or converted to ubiquinol during storage in almost all of them, vitamin C in soft capsules reduced ubiquinone to ubiquinol, and total CoQ10 ranged from 82% to 166% of the declared amount (Temova Rakuša and colleagues, 2021). The authors conclude that stabilisation has to come from the final formulation, whatever the form. We handle ubiquinol under nitrogen with an antioxidant system, pack both forms in light and oxygen barrier packs, and run accelerated stability studies on every new formula, with real-time studies when you add them, measuring ubiquinone and ubiquinol separately so the form on the label holds to the end of shelf life.
Partners in the formula
CoQ10 combines well with ingredients that carry authorised claims. In softgels, it sits naturally in an omega-3 fill: "EPA and DHA contribute to the normal function of the heart" applies to a product that is at least a source of EPA and DHA, with the information that the beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 250 mg of EPA and DHA. PQQ disodium salt is an authorised novel food in GB and the EU for food supplements at up to 20 mg a day, for adults excluding pregnant and lactating women. We check every combination for the total daily dose and each active's status in each market.
EFSA found the CoQ10 claims unproven: what labels say instead
As of October 2026, CoQ10 can be sold in food supplements in the UK, the EU and the US. EFSA judged the CoQ10 claims it assessed unproven (EFSA, 2010; BfR, 2023). No claim about CoQ10 itself is authorised in GB or the EU, so the label's claims come from the nutrients beside it. We design every formula to the rules of the markets you sell in.
- Great Britain and the EU: formulas carry authorised claims in exact wording, such as "Thiamine contributes to the normal function of the heart", "Vitamin E contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress" and "Selenium contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress", each for a product that is at least a source of that nutrient, which we set at 15% of its nutrient reference value per daily dose.
- European Union: as of October 2026, CoQ10 is not a novel food, because the European Commission's catalogue records significant use as a food before 15 May 1997. The EU sets no maximum amount, and because rules for substances other than vitamins and minerals are not harmonised across the EU, we check the daily dose and label against the national rules of every country you sell in.
- United States: CoQ10 is sold as a dietary ingredient. Structure and function claims need competent and reliable scientific evidence, a notification to FDA and FDA's standard disclaimer.
Our claims and regulation guide covers claim wording for each market in more depth.
CoQ10 dissolved, encapsulated and released against its specification
- Specify. We set the form, grade, dose, format, markets and claims with you.
- Source. CoQ10 comes from a supplier that has passed our supplier approval, reviewed annually, with a certificate of analysis for each lot. We confirm each lot's identity before use.
- Prepare. For softgels, CoQ10 is dissolved in the carrier oil with controlled heat and mixing, and the fill is checked for undissolved crystals; ubiquinol is handled under nitrogen. For other formats, dispersible grades are weighed against the batch record under our allergen management plan with yellow colour coding, then blended and checked for uniformity.
- Encapsulate, fill or form. Softgels are encapsulated and dried, capsules filled and checked by weight, tablets compressed, gummies cooked with the active added late, and powders sealed into sachets or stick packs.
- Pack. Light and oxygen barrier packs, with desiccant where moisture matters.
- Label and release. Label verification on every batch is the critical control point in our HACCP plan, and quality control releases every batch against its specification.
Ubiquinone and ubiquinol, measured apart by your CoQ10 manufacturer
Ask how each form is measured. Every batch is tested by accredited partner laboratories (ISO/IEC 17025) as part of every order, to a specification set per product and market:
- Identity and assay: ubiquinone and ubiquinol measured separately by HPLC, at release and across shelf life, with total CoQ10 against the label.
- Unit tests: fill weight uniformity for softgels and capsules, rupture or disintegration for softgels, and water activity for gummies.
- Contaminants: lead, cadmium and mercury against the GB and EU maximum levels for food supplements, residual solvents and microbiology.
- Stability: accelerated studies in the final pack, with real-time studies when you add them, which set the shelf life and any overage.
With every batch, you receive a certificate of analysis against the agreed specification, and the product file holds the specification, the stability data and the label review for each market. Our quality system adds a HACCP study per product type, reviewed annually; three retained samples per batch, kept for shelf life plus one year; and a full mock recall, forward and backward with mass balance, in seconds. Nothing is dispatched without quality control sign-off, and our testing and batch release page sets out the approach.
Research and development is a paid stage that can be included with an order of the right size. Start your project with your target markets, and we will recommend the form, the format and the dose for each.

Questions brands ask
Should a CoQ10 supplement use ubiquinone or ubiquinol?
Either can work, because the formulation decides absorption more than the name. Once absorbed, CoQ10 circulates mainly as ubiquinol, and in a 2019 crossover study of seven 100 mg products, the two best absorbed were softgels, one of ubiquinone and one of ubiquinol. Ubiquinol is less stable and needs protection from oxygen, so we make it in softgels under nitrogen with an antioxidant system. We choose the form on absorption and stability data for your finished product, then measure both forms on every batch.
Why are softgels the usual format for CoQ10?
Because CoQ10 is fat-soluble and its crystals must be dissolved before the body can absorb them. A softgel holds CoQ10 dissolved in oil, sealed away from oxygen, and in a 2019 study of seven 100 mg products the two best absorbed were softgels. We make softgels in-house, and use water-dispersible grades when you want CoQ10 in capsules, gummies, liquids or stick packs instead.
What dose of CoQ10 do the studies use?
Many clinical trials use 300 mg a day, and in a randomised trial in 60 healthy men, two 100 mg doses raised blood levels more than one 200 mg dose. Germany's BfR notes that the effects of intakes above 300 mg a day have not been investigated and that interactions with some medicines are not yet fully assessed. We set the dose per unit and per day with you, check it against each market's rules and add a label advisory for people taking medicines.
What claims can a CoQ10 supplement make?
In GB and the EU, as of October 2026, no claim about CoQ10 itself is authorised, so claims come from the nutrients in the formula. A product that is at least a source of thiamine can say "Thiamine contributes to the normal function of the heart", and vitamin E or selenium can carry oxidative stress claims. In the US, structure and function claims need competent and reliable scientific evidence, a notification to FDA and FDA's standard disclaimer.
Can CoQ10 be sold in the UK, the EU and the US?
Yes: as of October 2026, CoQ10 is sold in food supplements in all three markets. In the EU it is not a novel food, because the European Commission's catalogue records significant use as a food before 1997, and the EU sets no maximum amount. Rules for substances other than vitamins and minerals are not harmonised across the EU, so we check the dose and label for every country you sell in. In the US it is sold as a dietary ingredient.
How do you keep CoQ10 stable to the end of shelf life?
We build stability into the final formulation, because the form on the label can change in the pack. In one study of 11 products, total CoQ10 ranged from 82% to 166% of the declared amount, and vitamin C converted ubiquinone to ubiquinol in soft capsules. We handle ubiquinol under nitrogen with antioxidants, use light and oxygen barrier packs, and track both forms separately in accelerated stability studies, and in real-time studies when you add them.
How do you test CoQ10 supplements?
Every batch is tested by accredited partner laboratories (ISO/IEC 17025) as part of every order. Tests measure ubiquinone and ubiquinol separately by HPLC at release and across shelf life, total CoQ10 against the label, lead, cadmium and mercury, residual solvents and microbiology, plus fill weight and rupture for softgels and water activity for gummies. Quality control releases every batch, and you receive a certificate of analysis with each one.
