Caffeine and energy pouches, built as a range of strengths
Inside the scope of our HACCP and GMP certificate from BSI, we work as a caffeine pouch manufacturer for premium wellness brands, developing and making nicotine-free caffeine and energy pouches in Leicester from bench sample to sealed, labelled can. Each pouch releases a set dose of caffeine, B vitamins or botanicals over a session, with no liquid to carry and no sugar to count. We set caffeine per pouch against EFSA's safety figures, with single doses up to 200 mg, and caffeine per can against the rules of your strictest market. Every batch ships with its certificate of analysis, and your launch file holds the specification and stability report.
Caffeine and energy pouches belong to our functional pouch range, built on one fibre platform. We build a caffeine pouch as a range from the start: one base, one flavour system and strengths in steps, so a brand can add a stronger or a calmer version without starting again. Four types cover most briefs.
- Straight caffeine: anhydrous caffeine for an exact dose and a short ingredient list.
- Natural caffeine: guarana seed or green coffee extracts, standardised to their caffeine content, for a botanical label.
- Energy with vitamins: caffeine with B vitamins that carry authorised claims.
- Calm energy: caffeine with L-theanine, the pairing behind our nootropic pouch manufacturing. For no stimulant at all, start from our nicotine-free pouch base.
Every pouch starts from a plant-fibre matrix, usually microcrystalline cellulose or food fibres, with a humectant such as glycerol, sweeteners, flavour and a cooling note, sealed in a food-contact fleece.
Anchoring caffeine per pouch to published figures
Caffeine per pouch is a design decision with legal consequences, so we anchor it to published figures before the first sample.
| Design anchor | Published figure | What it means for your pouch |
|---|---|---|
| Single dose | Up to 200 mg raises no safety concerns for healthy adults (EFSA, 2015) | The ceiling for one pouch, or pouches used together |
| Daily intake | Up to 400 mg a day from all sources outside pregnancy; 200 mg a day in pregnancy (EFSA, 2015) | The daily number of pouches must leave room for coffee and tea |
| Sleep | 100 mg may delay and shorten sleep in some adults, particularly close to bedtime (EFSA, 2015) | Directions on the can steer use away from late evening |
| Medicinal check | Above 100 mg per recommended daily dose, Finland advises asking its medicines agency about classification (Finnish Food Authority, 2026) | A Finnish version may need a lower daily dose |
| Pack total | No more than 1,200 mg per sales package of a food supplement (Finnish Food Authority, 2026) | Pouch count times strength sets the can for Finland |
We recommend one strength per can and a range built in steps, rather than one product at the edge of every limit. Your formula is yours: the blend, strength, release profile and data belong to your brand, as our formula ownership commitment sets out.
Same caffeine in every pouch, released at a set pace
Dose uniformity
Caffeine works at milligram doses, so every pouch must carry its labelled amount. Fine caffeine can separate from coarse fibre, so we match particle sizes, pre-blend caffeine with part of the filler and confirm blend uniformity before pouching.
Release and moisture
Caffeine is water-soluble and uncharged at the pH of saliva, so release depends on the matrix, not on pH adjustment: fibre type, particle size, fill density and moisture set how fast saliva reaches it. Moist pouches deliver much of the dose early; drier pouches release more evenly. Coated or granulated caffeine slows the curve and holds back bitterness. We measure release in simulated saliva at set time points during development.
Stability and interactions
Caffeine itself is chemically robust; its partners are not. B vitamins lose potency with moisture, heat and light, riboflavin tints a white pouch yellow and breaks down in light, and menthol and citrus notes fade through the lid. We protect vitamins with low water activity and opaque cans, set overages from stability data and use encapsulated flavours for long sessions. As of October 2026, the European Commission's tolerance guidance accepts vitamins in food supplements from 20% below to 50% above the declared value, while added vitamins in US products must meet at least the declared value.
Taste and cooling
Caffeine is bitter, and a pouch holds it against the gum for the whole session. We balance bitterness with sucralose, acesulfame K or steviol glycosides, use a little salt to suppress bitterness and add cooling agents for a clean finish, each checked against the additive and flavouring rules of every target market. A sweetened pouch carries "with sweetener(s)" with its name. Profiles stay adult: mint, citrus, coffee and botanical notes. This is where our flavour and taste masking work starts.
Anhydrous caffeine or natural extracts, plus B vitamins and L-theanine
A pouch carries milligrams, not grams. Actives that work at low doses, dissolve in saliva and can be made to taste right suit it. As of October 2026:
| Active | Why it suits a pouch | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Caffeine, anhydrous | Potent, soluble and exact | Caffeine statement and content on UK and EU labels; EFSA linked 75 mg or more per serving to alertness and attention (2011), but those claims are on hold, not authorised |
| Guarana seed or green coffee extract | A botanical label, standardised to caffeine | Counts as caffeine in the dose and on the label; guarana and coffee seeds are not novel foods in the EU, and each extract is matched to national plant lists |
| Paraxanthine | The main product of caffeine breakdown in the body | US formulas only: not an authorised novel food in the EU or GB |
| Thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, B6, B12 | Tiny doses with authorised claims for energy-yielding metabolism and, all but thiamin, for tiredness and fatigue | 15% or more of the NRV per daily portion; overages for moisture and light |
| L-theanine | Soluble, mild and often paired with caffeine | Not novel in EU food supplements only when extracted from green tea; from other sources it is a novel food; no authorised claim |
| Sodium and potassium | Flavour and mouthfeel | Authorised hydration claims belong to carbohydrate-electrolyte drinks with a set composition |
Gram-dose actives belong in other formats. Electrolytes at hydration doses, creatine and protein work better in a powder or drink, the territory of our electrolyte supplement manufacturing. Magnesium's tiredness and fatigue claim needs 56 mg of magnesium per daily portion, 15% of its NRV: a heavy load of bitter salt for a pouch. For energy formulas beyond the pouch, we also make energy supplements and energy drinks. We check every ingredient's status in each target market before we formulate.
Seven steps, with a specification for every strength
Every project starts in development: bench samples in your flavours and strengths, release testing in simulated saliva and a stability study in the final can, then a pilot batch before full production in Leicester. You sign off each stage, and every strength gets its own specification. Production then runs in seven steps:
- Specify. We agree caffeine per pouch, pouches per can, release profile, moisture, water activity, flavour, shelf life and markets with you. Supplier approval comes before any material is used, with a review every year, and caffeine arrives with a certificate of analysis for identity and purity.
- Weigh and pre-blend. Materials are weighed against the batch record under our allergen management plan, which uses yellow colour coding. Caffeine and micro-dose vitamins are pre-blended with part of the filler.
- Blend and condition. Filler, sweeteners, flavour and cooling agents join in a set order, and humectant and water bring the blend to target moisture.
- Check the blend. Moisture and blend uniformity are checked before pouching.
- Pouch and seal. The blend is dosed into fleece and sealed into single pouches, with in-process checks on pouch weight and seal.
- Can and label. Pouches are counted into cans under a peel-off seal. Label verification on every batch is the critical control point in our HACCP plan, CCP-01; on caffeine products it confirms the caffeine statement and content against the specification.
- Retain and release. Three retained samples per batch are kept for shelf life plus one year. Every batch is released by quality control against its specification, and nothing is dispatched without quality control sign-off.
The pilot batch confirms blend order, moisture and pouch weight on the production line before the first full batch, and every later batch is made to the same batch record. The HACCP study for pouches is reviewed every year, and any non-conformance is closed with QA and Operations sign-off.
Caffeine per can, child-resistant closures and adult artwork
- Cans and seals: plastic or metal cans chosen for moisture barrier and lid feel, with a peel-off seal until first opening. We arrange paper-based cans through our partner network.
- Caffeine per can: pouch count times strength, set against the strictest market you sell in; a 20-pouch can at 60 mg a pouch holds 1,200 mg.
- Child-resistant closures: tested to ISO 8317 and arranged through our partner network for stronger products.
- Small labels: in the UK and EU, mandatory text needs an x-height of at least 1.2 mm, or 0.9 mm where the largest surface is under 80 cm², and the caffeine statement sits in the same field of vision as the name.
- Clear identity: caffeine and its strength on the lid, with adult artwork.
- Coding: a batch code and best before date on every can, tracing each can to its batch record.
- Recyclability: the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation has applied since 12 August 2026, with recyclability grades from 2030 at the earliest, so we choose cans and lids with those grades in mind.
How a caffeine pouch manufacturer checks the dose, pouch by pouch
British VitaTech is ISO 9001, HACCP and GMP certified by BSI, and FDA registered, and our pouches are GMP certified within that BSI scope. BRCGS implementation under way, certification expected in early 2027. Every batch is tested by accredited partner laboratories (ISO/IEC 17025) as part of every order: development tests prove the design, and your specification sets the release tests.
- Caffeine: assay by HPLC with UV detection on individual pouches and a composite, so the whole can matches the label; identity and caffeine content of each natural extract lot.
- Vitamins: assays for every vitamin that carries a claim, at release and across shelf life.
- Moisture and water activity: against your specification, with water activity measured by methods such as ISO 18787.
- Microbiology: total viable count, yeasts, moulds and named pathogens.
- Heavy metals: against the UK and EU limits for food supplements of lead 3.0 mg/kg, cadmium 1.0 mg/kg and mercury 0.10 mg/kg.
- Sensory: flavour, bitterness, sweetness and cooling against an agreed reference sample.
- Stability: accelerated and real-time studies of caffeine, vitamins, moisture, flavour and seal, which set the shelf life on your label.
Each batch ships with its certificate of analysis and batch release confirmation, and your launch file holds the specification with its test methods and the stability report that sets the shelf life. Our testing and batch release page explains the full programme, and quality and accreditations covers each certificate and its scope.
One base, with strength and label set for each market
United Kingdom
As of October 2026, caffeine pouches are sold in Great Britain as foods or food supplements, under rules enforced by local authorities. A pouch carries "Contains caffeine. Not recommended for children or pregnant women" in the same field of vision as its name, followed by its caffeine content, stated per daily portion on a food supplement. We design every caffeine pouch for adults, with strengths, flavours and artwork that do not appeal to under-16s. Claims come only from the GB nutrition and health claims register. Caffeine claims for alertness are on hold, not authorised, and usable only within the limits of transitional rules, so we build the energy message on authorised B vitamin claims, such as "Vitamin B12 contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue", with vitamin B12 at 15% or more of its NRV per daily portion.
European Union
The same caffeine statement applies across the EU, and many member states require notification of a food supplement before launch. As of October 2026 there is no harmonised rule for pouches, so national rules sit on top: the Finnish Food Authority, for example, sets the 100 mg and 1,200 mg checks above for food supplements and recommends an exact maximum daily use on the label, such as a set number of pouches. We build each market's version on the same base, changing only the strength, the pouch count and the label.
United States
As of October 2026, caffeine pouches are sold in the US as dietary supplements: intended for ingestion and not presented as a conventional food. FDA does not regard products intended to enter the body directly through mucosal tissues as dietary supplements, so we write US labels and marketing to describe release into saliva that is swallowed, never absorption through the gums. The conventional food route is narrow, because FDA's GRAS listing for caffeine covers cola-type beverages. FDA considers some supplements made of pure or highly concentrated caffeine adulterated, so every pouch we make carries a fixed, labelled dose. Labels carry a Supplement Facts panel with caffeine per serving and structure and function claims with FDA's disclaimer, and FDA has cited 400 mg a day as an amount not generally associated with negative effects for most adults. We are an FDA registered food facility for dietary supplements.
One UK pouch brand, a client since 2023, has grown from a small brand to over 30,000 units a month; our R&D team developed four distinct formulas for it and guided its compliance checks for Europe, the USA and Mexico. R&D is a paid stage that can be included with an order of the right size. Start your project with your target strength, flavours and markets, and we will build the pouch and its labels around them.

Questions brands ask
How much caffeine should a caffeine pouch contain?
We set caffeine per pouch with you for each market, anchored to EFSA's safety figures: single doses up to 200 mg, and up to 400 mg a day from all sources, raise no safety concerns for healthy adults outside pregnancy. We recommend one strength per can and a range built in steps. Finland adds two checks for food supplements: medicinal classification above 100 mg per daily dose, and no more than 1,200 mg per sales package.
What must a caffeine pouch label say in the UK and EU?
A pouch with added caffeine carries "Contains caffeine. Not recommended for children or pregnant women" in the same field of vision as its name, and a food supplement states its caffeine content per daily portion. The stronger "High caffeine content" wording is for drinks above 150 mg per litre, not pouches. Food supplements add the usual daily dose statements, and Finland also recommends an exact maximum daily use, such as a set number of pouches.
Are your caffeine pouches designed for adults?
Yes. We design every caffeine pouch for adults, with strengths, flavours and artwork that do not appeal to under-16s. The lid names caffeine and its strength, the label carries the caffeine statement, and the directions steer use away from late evening. For stronger products we arrange child-resistant closures tested to ISO 8317, and every label is verified on every batch before release.
Can caffeine pouches be sold in the US?
Yes, as dietary supplements. A US supplement must be intended for ingestion, and FDA has said that products intended to enter the body through mucosal tissues are not dietary supplements, so we advise describing release into saliva that is swallowed. FDA's GRAS listing for caffeine covers only cola-type beverages, which is why pouches take the supplement route. We are an FDA registered food facility for dietary supplements.
Should we use natural or synthetic caffeine?
Both work; the choice is about the label story and control. Anhydrous caffeine gives an exact dose and a neutral base. Natural caffeine from guarana seed or green coffee extracts gives a botanical label, but each lot varies, so we use standardised extracts and confirm their caffeine content before use. It is the same molecule from either source, so the dose limits and the caffeine statement apply in the same way.
Can you make paraxanthine pouches?
Yes, for the US. Paraxanthine, the main product of caffeine breakdown in the body, is sold in US dietary supplements. As of October 2026 it is not an authorised novel food in the EU or GB, so for brands selling in all three we build a caffeine version for the UK and EU alongside the US formula. Both share one base and flavour system, so the range tastes the same in every market.
How do you stop caffeine pouches tasting bitter?
We design the taste system around the caffeine from the first bench sample. Sweeteners such as sucralose or steviol glycosides balance bitterness, a little salt suppresses it, and cooling agents give a clean finish. Where bitterness still breaks through, coated or granulated caffeine slows its release into saliva. Every sweetener and flavouring is checked against the rules of each target market, and sweetened pouches carry "with sweetener(s)" with the name.
