Liver formulas built on choline, milk thistle and artichoke

Liver health supplements are one of the custom ranges we take from the first formula to the finished pack for premium wellness brands, working in our UK facility as a liver health supplement manufacturer. We build them on choline at the dose its authorised liver claim needs, on standardised milk thistle and artichoke extracts described by plant part, extract and marker, and on supporting vitamins, minerals and botanicals, in capsules, tablets, softgels, liquids and shots, powders and stick packs, and gummies. Every batch comes with a certificate of analysis, our labels never promise to cleanse, and your formula is yours. Liver health sits within our gut health supplement manufacturing range, beside digestion.

In the US natural retail channel, milk thistle sales grew 33.9% in 2024, according to the American Botanical Council's Herb Market Report (reported by NutraIngredients, September 2025). Choline shows a gap between reference intakes and what products supply: EFSA set an adequate intake of 400 mg a day for adults (EFSA, 2016), while US supplements typically provide 10 to 250 mg (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, 2022).

We specify every active by form, plant part, extract and marker, and screen each one in-house against the novel food rules of every target market before a formula is fixed.

Choline

Choline carries the category's authorised liver claim, so it anchors most formulas. Choline bitartrate is about 41% choline and choline chloride about 75%. Citicoline, about 21% choline, is an authorised novel food in UK and EU food supplements at up to 500 mg a day, and phosphatidylcholine from sunflower, soy or egg lecithin is about 13%. Our choline and citicoline supplement manufacturing page covers each form in depth.

Milk thistle

Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is used as a standardised extract of the fruit, often called the seed. Its active fraction, silymarin, is a standardised extract of about 70 to 80% flavonolignans and flavonoids, among them silybin A and B, isosilybin A and B, silychristin and silydianin (Javed and colleagues, Alternative Medicine Review, 2011). We specify silymarin content, the share of silybin, the extraction solvent and the ratio of fruit to extract. In the UK, milk thistle products with digestive indications are registered traditional herbal medicines (MHRA, 2025), so our food supplements never borrow those indications.

Artichoke

Artichoke (Cynara scolymus) is used as a leaf extract. Its caffeoylquinic acids, chiefly chlorogenic acid and cynarin with its isomers, and its luteolin glycosides are the markers, measured by HPLC (Mulinacci and colleagues, Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis, 2004). Extraction changes the profile: the same study found that water extraction increased the breakdown of the dicaffeoyl compounds, while hot hydroalcoholic extraction left them unchanged, so the solvent goes into our specification. Artichoke leaf also appears in UK registered traditional herbal medicines for digestive use, in combination with other herbs, so our labels never borrow those indications either.

Supporting nutrients and botanicals

Nutrients complete the claims plan: vitamin C, vitamin E and selenium contribute to the protection of cells from oxidative stress, and B vitamins contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism. Dandelion root and other traditional botanicals follow the same specification discipline, set out on our herbal supplement manufacturing page. Gut-liver formulas also add probiotics, fibres or postbiotics.

One authorised liver claim, and it belongs to choline

As of October 2026, one authorised claim speaks to the liver in GB and the EU: "Choline contributes to the maintenance of normal liver function", for food with at least 82.5 mg of choline per 100 g or 100 ml or per single portion. On the same condition, choline also carries "Choline contributes to normal lipid metabolism" and "Choline contributes to normal homocysteine metabolism". Milk thistle and artichoke carry no authorised claim, because botanical claims are on hold in both markets, so our labels describe each botanical by plant part, extract and marker and let choline carry the liver message. In the US, structure and function claims such as support for normal liver function need competent and reliable evidence, a notification to FDA and its standard disclaimer, and never a medical claim. Our claims and regulation page covers each market in depth.

Why "detox" claims fail

In the UK, CAP and the ASA consider a general detox claim for a food likely to be a health claim, and regard a specific one, such as a claim to detox the colon, as a specific health claim acceptable only if it appears on the GB register. None does. CAP also notes that the liver and kidneys automatically detoxify and excrete many toxic materials, and that it has seen no evidence that toxins can be removed from the body by other means (CAP, 2022). The same claims law applies in the EU. So our liver products never say detox, cleanse or flush, and never promise to remove microplastics: they carry the choline claim at its dose and declare their botanicals.

Choline's claim dose, silymarin's absorption gap and moisture control

From the choline claim floor to the US upper level

The choline claim sets the floor: at least 82.5 mg of choline per 100 g or 100 ml or per single portion, about 200 mg of choline bitartrate per portion. At the top end, the US upper level for choline is 3.5 g a day for adults (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, 2022), so a high-dose formula needs a clear reason. Milk thistle and artichoke doses follow the extract: we set silymarin and caffeoylquinic acid content per serving from the extract's specification and declare both on the label.

Closing silymarin's absorption gap

Silymarin dissolves poorly in water, and only 20 to 50% of an oral dose is absorbed from the gut. Formulation closes part of the gap: a complex of silybin with phosphatidylcholine gave significantly greater bioavailability than uncomplexed silymarin in a human study (Javed and colleagues, 2011). We make phospholipid-complexed milk thistle in capsules and softgels, and confirm the silybin content of the finished product, not only of the raw material. Choline salts dissolve fully, and in a crossover study choline bitartrate raised blood choline fastest while egg phosphatidylcholine peaked latest (Böckmann and colleagues, European Journal of Nutrition, 2022).

Moisture, fishy notes and oxidation

Water is the main enemy. Choline chloride pulls water from the air, and choline salts can take on a fishy note when badly stored, so we blend them within the humidity limits set for the product, fill them into HPMC capsules and pack them with a desiccant. Dry botanical extracts take up water and cake, so they get the same protection. Phospholipid complexes oxidise, so they get antioxidant protection and nitrogen-flushed packs. Artichoke's dicaffeoyl compounds break down in water, so artichoke liquids go through stability testing before launch.

Compatibility and safety

Choline is not known to have any clinically relevant interactions with medicines (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, 2022). Milk thistle and artichoke belong to the daisy family, so their labels carry a note for people sensitive to that plant family, and every botanical label advises anyone taking medicines to speak to their doctor or pharmacist before use. Soy and egg lecithin sources are declared as allergens under our allergen management plan, with yellow colour coding.

Phospholipid milk thistle in softgels, choline in capsules and shots

  • Capsules carry choline salts, milk thistle and artichoke extracts in HPMC shells with desiccant packs. Our capsules are GMP certified; see capsule and tablet manufacturing.
  • Tablets carry higher-dose extracts, film coated to mask bitterness and ease swallowing. We make tablets in-house.
  • Softgels carry phospholipid-complexed milk thistle and lipid-based fills, made in-house.
  • Liquids and shots carry choline salts, which dissolve fully, with botanical extracts under stability control; see liquid supplement manufacturing. Our liquids are GMP certified.
  • Powders and stick packs put choline into drink mixes, with flavour work to mask its tart note.
  • Gummies carry choline at modest doses. They are GMP certified, and every gummy batch gets an active assay as standard.

Every format is made in our UK facility, which is ISO 9001, HACCP and GMP certified by BSI, and FDA registered. Your formula is yours: the specification, the marker targets and the stability data belong to your brand.

Botanical identity confirmed before any liver formula is blended

  1. Screen and specify. We screen every form and extract in-house against the novel food rules of each target market, then agree form, plant part, extraction solvent, marker targets, label tolerance and pack with you.
  2. Approve and receive. Supplier approval comes before any material is used, with a review every year. Each lot arrives with a certificate of analysis, and every botanical lot has its identity confirmed before release to production.
  3. Weigh and blend. Materials are weighed against the batch record within the humidity limits set for the product, with soy and egg sources handled under our allergen management plan.
  4. Fill or form. Capsules are filled and checked by weight, tablets compressed and film coated, softgels encapsulated and dried, and liquids filled and sealed.
  5. Label and release. Label verification on every batch is the critical control point in our HACCP plan, CCP-01. Three retained samples per batch are kept for shelf life plus one year, and nothing is dispatched without quality control sign-off.

A liver health supplement manufacturer checks milk thistle mycotoxins

Ask how each marker is proved, and what each extract was tested for beyond it. Every batch is tested by accredited partner laboratories (ISO/IEC 17025) as part of every order, and your specification sets the release tests:

  • Assay: silymarin and silybin by HPLC, artichoke caffeoylquinic acids and luteolin glycosides by HPLC, and choline by ion chromatography. Gummies get an active assay on every batch as standard.
  • Identity: an HPTLC fingerprint against an authenticated reference for every botanical lot, which exposes the wrong species or plant part.
  • Mycotoxins: a 2020 review found Fusarium and Alternaria mycotoxins in milk thistle supplements, with one Alternaria toxin in 57 of 58 samples examined (Pickova and colleagues, Toxins, 2020), so we test milk thistle lots for mycotoxins against limits in your specification.
  • Purity: lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic, pesticide residues for botanicals, and microbiology to the specification for each format.
  • Stability: accelerated and real-time studies on every new formula, tracking markers, choline, odour and appearance.

Our quality system adds a HACCP study per product type, reviewed annually, and a full mock recall, forward and backward with mass balance, in seconds; our testing and batch release page sets out the full approach. R&D is a paid stage that can be included with an order of the right size. Start your project with your actives, your format and your markets, and we will build the formula and the claims plan together.

Questions brands ask

What does a liver health supplement manufacturer make?

A liver health supplement manufacturer develops and produces choline, milk thistle, artichoke and botanical formulas for brands. At British VitaTech that covers form and extract selection, marker targets, novel food screening, manufacture, batch testing and label claims for the UK, EU and US. We make capsules, tablets, softgels, liquids, powders and gummies. R&D is a paid stage that can be included with an order of the right size, and your formula is yours.

Which liver health claim is authorised in the UK and EU?

As of October 2026, one: "Choline contributes to the maintenance of normal liver function". It applies to food with at least 82.5 mg of choline per 100 g or 100 ml or per single portion, which takes about 200 mg of choline bitartrate. Choline also carries authorised claims for normal lipid metabolism and normal homocysteine metabolism on the same condition. Milk thistle and artichoke carry no authorised claim, because botanical claims are on hold.

Can a liver supplement say "detox"?

Not as a promise to remove toxins, and we leave the word out. As of October 2026, CAP and the ASA consider a general detox claim for a food likely to be a health claim, and accept a specific one, such as detoxing the colon, only if it appears on the GB register, where none does. CAP also notes that the liver and kidneys automatically detoxify and excrete many toxic materials.

Can milk thistle and artichoke supplements make liver claims?

Not with an authorised claim in the UK or EU. As of October 2026, botanical claims remain on hold in both markets, and in the UK milk thistle, and artichoke in herbal combinations, are registered traditional herbal medicines for digestive use, so food supplements never borrow those indications. Our labels describe each botanical by plant part, extract and marker, and add choline at its claim dose to carry the liver message. US labels use structure and function claims with FDA's disclaimer.

How do you improve milk thistle absorption?

Through the form we choose and then prove. Silymarin dissolves poorly in water, and only 20 to 50% of an oral dose is absorbed. A complex of silybin with phosphatidylcholine gave significantly greater bioavailability than uncomplexed silymarin in a human study, so we make phospholipid-complexed milk thistle in capsules and softgels. We protect the complex from oxidation with antioxidants and nitrogen-flushed packs, and confirm silybin content in the finished product by HPLC.

Which tests matter for milk thistle and artichoke extracts?

Identity, markers and contaminants. Every botanical lot gets an HPTLC fingerprint against an authenticated reference, and HPLC measures silymarin, silybin and artichoke's caffeoylquinic acids. Milk thistle also needs mycotoxin testing: a 2020 review found Fusarium and Alternaria mycotoxins in milk thistle supplements, one of them in 57 of 58 samples examined. Heavy metals, pesticide residues and microbiology complete the panel, run by accredited partner laboratories on every batch.

Can supplements remove microplastics?

No supplement can claim to. As of October 2026, no authorised claim in GB or the EU refers to microplastics, and the science is early: WHO found in 2022 that the available data were of only very limited use for assessing the risk to people, and nutrition scientists writing in 2026 say causality is unproven. Microplastics stay context for a brand's story, and we build liver products on claims and tests that stand up today.
