HMO supplements for adults and children, built on authorised sources
Working as an HMO supplement manufacturer for premium brands, our UK facility formulates and makes custom human milk oligosaccharide (HMO) supplements: stick packs, sachets and powders carrying gram-level servings of 2'-FL or 3-FL, capsules for sub-gram servings such as 0.5 g of a sialyllactose, gummies, drinks and synbiotics with a named Bifidobacterium strain. Every formula is built on an authorised HMO from a source approved in each of your markets, at a serving inside its daily ceiling for every age group on the label. Each project comes with the finished product specification, a certificate of analysis for each batch, the HMO source's authorisation for each market and the stability data.
HMOs are the complex sugars that human milk carries beyond lactose, and a growing family of them is now made for food supplements. They built their market in infant formula, and the same authorisations cover food supplements for adults and children. HMOs sit within our gut health supplement manufacturing range, beside the Bifidobacterium strains on our probiotic supplement manufacturing page. Inactivated strains for gummies and drinks sit on our postbiotic supplement manufacturing page.
Every HMO is defined twice: by its structure and by its source. Each producer's material carries its own authorisation, specification and conditions of use, so the source decides the serving ceiling and the age groups a product can serve.
Fucosylated HMOs
2'-fucosyllactose (2'-FL) has the most authorised sources on the GB register: four, one made by chemical synthesis and three by fermentation with derivative strains of Escherichia coli. 3-fucosyllactose (3-FL) and two mixtures complete the group: 2'-FL with difucosyllactose (DFL), and lacto-N-fucopentaose I (LNFP-I) with 2'-FL.
Lacto-N-tetraose and lacto-N-neotetraose
LNT and LNnT are neutral HMOs made of four sugars. LNnT is authorised from chemical synthesis and from fermentation, and LNT from fermentation.
Sialylated HMOs
3'-sialyllactose (3'-SL) and 6'-sialyllactose (6'-SL) carry sialic acid and are supplied as sodium salts. Their conditions differ by producer: in Great Britain, one 3'-SL source is limited to people over 3 at 0.5 g a day, while another allows 1.0 g a day and sets lower levels for infants and young children.
Choosing a source
We screen every HMO source in-house against the GB register and the EU's Union list before a formula is fixed. The lists differ: in Great Britain, 3-FL comes from a single authorised source, while the EU authorises more than one. Some sources are also protected, so only the authorising producer's material can be used until protection ends; in Great Britain, that runs to the end of 27 June 2029 for 3-FL. We specify the source, grade and certificate for every lot, and record each market's authorisation in the supplier approval file.
Daily ceilings by age group, and what the 2'-FL evidence measures
Dose: each HMO has a daily ceiling by age group
These are the food supplement maximums per day in Great Britain, as of October 2026, from the FSA register of authorised novel foods:
| HMO | Adults and children over 3 | Young children (1 to 3) | Infants (under 1) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2'-FL | 3.0 g | 1.2 g | 1.2 g, one source |
| 2'-FL and DFL mixture | 4.0 g | 4.0 g | Not permitted |
| LNnT | 1.5 g | 0.6 g | Not permitted |
| LNT | 2.0 g | 2.0 g | Not permitted |
| 3-FL | 4.0 g | 2.0 g | 2.0 g |
| LNFP-I and 2'-FL mixture | 3.0 g | 1.5 g | 1.5 g |
| 3'-SL sodium salt | 0.5 g or 1.0 g, by source | 0.15 g, one source | 0.2 g, one source |
| 6'-SL sodium salt | 1.0 g | 0.3 g, one source | 0.4 g, one source |
The EU sets the same 2'-FL and LNnT ceilings, and its newer sources carry their own: an LNT source authorised in 2026 is for people over 3 only, at 2.0 g a day. We set servings so the daily amount for every age group on the label stays inside its ceiling: where a label names more than one age group, the lowest ceiling sets the serving. A product with two HMOs keeps each one inside its own limit and carries each one's designation and same-day statement.
Absorption: what the evidence measures
2'-FL is non-digestible and identical to the 2'-FL in human milk (FSA, 2025), so it reaches the gut bacteria undigested, and that is where the evidence measures it. In a randomised controlled trial in 89 healthy older adults (Carter and colleagues, Cell Reports Medicine, 2025), 2'-FL raised Bifidobacterium, and participants who lacked it at the start were more likely not to respond. So we often pair an HMO with a named Bifidobacterium strain as a synbiotic, or with a fibre such as inulin from our fibre and prebiotic supplement manufacturing range, and take label claims from nutrients the register covers.
Stability and lactose
HMO powders are specified dry: the EU's 2026 LNT authorisation allows no more than 7% water, and a 10% solution must sit at pH 4.0 to 6.5. We keep blends dry, pack them in high-barrier film, and confirm HMO content after processing and to the end of shelf life through our stability and shelf life testing programme, with added time points for cooked formats such as gummies and for acidic drinks. Residual lactose from production also sits within each specification, up to 7% in that LNT, so every HMO goes through our allergen management plan, with yellow colour coding, and we assess each label's milk declaration.
Gram-level sticks, sub-gram capsules and products for young children
We make every HMO format in our UK facility, which is ISO 9001, HACCP and GMP certified by BSI.
- Stick packs and sachets carry a gram-level serving of 2'-FL or 3-FL that dissolves in water or milk, sealed in foil laminate. See sachet and stick pack manufacturing.
- Powders in tubs suit HMO and fibre blends and synbiotic powders with a measured scoop; see powder supplement manufacturing.
- Capsules suit sub-gram servings, such as 0.5 g of a sialyllactose, in HPMC shells with a dry blend. Capsules are GMP certified; see capsule manufacturing.
- Gummies and drinks carry HMOs in their sugar or liquid base, with the HMO confirmed after cooking or filling. Gummies get an active assay on every batch as standard, and gummies and liquids are GMP certified.
- Products for young children follow the young-child ceilings in the table, as powders or sticks to stir into food or milk, with the label statements they need. Supplements for infants under 12 months are food supplements, not infant formula: they use only the sources authorised for infants, with Cronobacter testing on every batch.
Authorised HMO sources, same-day statements and US notification
As of October 2026, HMOs can be sold in food supplements in the UK, EU and US, on different terms. We design every formula to the rules of the markets you sell in, and our claims and regulation page covers the detail.
- Great Britain and the EU. Only authorised sources, within their ceilings. Labels carry the HMO's designation, such as "2'-fucosyllactose", and a statement that the supplement should not be used if other foods with the added HMO are consumed the same day. Labels for young children add breast milk to that statement, and sources not authorised under 3 say so. As of October 2026, no health claim is authorised for HMOs, so labels state content and take claims from added nutrients, such as "Calcium contributes to the normal function of digestive enzymes".
- United States. FDA has raised no questions on GRAS notices for HMOs such as 2'-FL in infant formula and foods. In a supplement, an HMO is a dietary ingredient: one new to the US market needs a new dietary ingredient notification unless it has been present in the food supply in a form not chemically altered. Labels can carry structure and function claims backed by competent and reliable scientific evidence, notified to FDA, with its standard disclaimer.
HMO stick packs and capsules dosed from each lot's assay
The HMO producer makes, purifies and dries each lot and certifies it against the authorised specification. Every supplier passes our approval process before any material is used. Our process runs in six steps:
- Goods-in. The certificate of analysis is checked against the specification for that source: HMO content, lactose and related sugars, water, protein, microbiology and endotoxins.
- Dispensing. Each serving's weight is calculated from the lot's HMO assay, so the daily amount stays inside the ceiling for every age group on the label.
- Blending. The HMO is blended with fibres or nutrients in a set order; a dried Bifidobacterium strain for a synbiotic goes in last, under controlled humidity.
- Filling. Blends are filled into stick packs or HPMC capsules and weight-checked.
- Packing. Sticks are sealed in foil laminate; capsules go into high-barrier bottles or blisters with desiccant.
- Label check and release. The designation, the same-day statement and any age statement are verified on every batch, the critical control point in our HACCP plan.
The critical steps are dose accuracy against the ceiling, moisture control and label accuracy. Each product type has its own HACCP study, reviewed every year. Every project comes with its documents: the finished product specification, a certificate of analysis for each batch, the HMO source's authorisation for each market, the allergen statement and the stability data.
HMO content measured in the finished product, to the end of shelf life
Ask how the HMO amount on the label is measured in the finished product, and how the manufacturer keeps a serving inside its ceiling. Every batch is tested by accredited partner laboratories (ISO/IEC 17025) as part of every order, as our testing and batch release page explains.
- HMO identity and content by liquid chromatography against reference standards, in the finished product and at the end of shelf life.
- Related sugars: lactose and the by-products each specification limits.
- Microbiology to the specification, including Enterobacteriaceae, Salmonella and Cronobacter for products for young children, and live counts for synbiotics.
- Contaminants: arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury, and aflatoxin M1 where the specification sets it.
- Water and water activity of the blend and the finished product.
Quality control releases every batch against its specification, and nothing is dispatched without quality control sign-off. We keep three retained samples per batch for shelf life plus one year, and a full mock recall, forward and backward with mass balance, runs in seconds. We are ISO 9001, HACCP and GMP certified by BSI, and FDA registered. BRCGS implementation under way, certification expected in early 2027. Your formula is yours, including its specification and stability data. Start your project with your HMO, your age groups and your markets, and we build the formula around them.

Questions brands ask
What is an HMO supplement?
An HMO supplement delivers human milk oligosaccharides, the complex sugars that human milk carries beyond lactose, now made by fermentation or chemical synthesis. Authorised HMOs include 2'-FL, 3-FL, LNT, LNnT and the sialyllactoses 3'-SL and 6'-SL, plus mixtures. In GB and the EU, each source has its own daily ceiling by age group, so we build every HMO supplement on an authorised source at a serving inside that ceiling, often with a Bifidobacterium strain or a fibre.
How much HMO can a food supplement contain?
It depends on the HMO, its source and the age group. As of October 2026, the GB register allows 2'-FL at up to 3.0 g a day for the general population and 1.2 g for young children, LNnT at 1.5 g and 0.6 g, and 3-FL at 4.0 g over 3 and 2.0 g under 3. The EU sets the same 2'-FL and LNnT ceilings, and its newer sources carry their own conditions.
Can you make HMO supplements for young children?
Yes, within the young-child ceilings each source allows. As of October 2026, 2'-FL is limited to 1.2 g a day for children aged 1 to 3 in Great Britain, and some sources, such as one 3'-SL, are not permitted under 3 at all. Labels for young children must say the supplement should not be used if breast milk or other foods with the added HMO are consumed the same day. Every batch for young children is tested for Cronobacter.
Can HMO supplements be sold in the US?
Yes. As of October 2026, FDA has raised no questions on GRAS notices for HMOs such as 2'-FL from several producers, for infant formula and foods. In a supplement, an HMO is a dietary ingredient: one new to the US market needs a new dietary ingredient notification unless it has been present in the food supply in a form not chemically altered. US labels can carry structure and function claims with FDA's standard disclaimer, and no medical claims.
Which formats work for HMO supplements?
Stick packs, sachets and powders suit gram-level servings of 2'-FL or 3-FL, which dissolve in water or milk. Capsules suit sub-gram servings such as a sialyllactose, and gummies and drinks carry HMOs in their sugar or liquid base, with the HMO confirmed after processing. A synbiotic adds a dried Bifidobacterium strain, blended last under controlled humidity. We make every format in our UK facility, which is ISO 9001, HACCP and GMP certified by BSI.
What can an HMO supplement label claim?
In GB and the EU, no health claim is authorised for HMOs as of October 2026, so labels state the HMO and its amount, carry the required statements and take claims from added nutrients, such as "Calcium contributes to the normal function of digestive enzymes". In the US, structure and function claims are possible with competent and reliable scientific evidence, notification to FDA and its standard disclaimer. No HMO label makes a medical claim.
Do you make private label HMO supplements?
We develop bespoke HMO supplements rather than relabelling stock formulas. A bespoke formula lets you choose the HMO and its source for each market, the serving, the age groups, any pairing with a Bifidobacterium strain or fibre, and the format. R&D is a paid stage that can be included with an order of the right size, and your formula is yours, including its specification and stability data.
