L-theanine in capsules, gummies and calm or focus pouches

Capsules, tablets, gummies, powders, shots and functional pouches, all made in Leicester, make up the custom L-theanine supplements we take from the first formula to the finished pack as an L-theanine manufacturer for premium wellness brands. Every product is built on a documented grade that is legal in every market you sell in, at a dose taken from human studies, usually 100 to 200 mg per serving, with claims carried by the nutrients beside it. You receive the specification, certificates of analysis and the document file each market asks for. L-theanine sits within our nootropic and brain health supplement manufacturing.

L-theanine is a non-protein amino acid from the tea plant, Camellia sinensis, where it contributes to the favourable taste of tea (Vuong and colleagues, Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, 2011). Commercial grades come from three routes: extraction from tea leaves, chemical or enzymatic synthesis, and microbial fermentation. The route decides where the finished product can be sold, so we fix it in the specification before formulation starts.

Grade How it is made Where it fits, as of October 2026
Green tea L-theanine Extracted and purified from tea leaves UK, EU and US supplements; the grade for every UK and EU product
Fermented L-theanine Made by microbial fermentation, then purified US foods, drinks and supplements
Synthetic L-theanine Made by chemical or enzymatic synthesis US foods, drinks and supplements
Tea extracts standardised to L-theanine Tea extract concentrated for its amino acids Natural-positioning supplements, with the caffeine and catechins they carry specified and declared

Chirality is the specification point many briefs miss. L-theanine has a mirror-image form, D-theanine, and synthetic routes can produce both. In 2004, chiral HPLC analysis at Iowa State University found five of six commercial theanine products to be mixtures of the two forms, and a follow-up study in rats found that D- and L-theanine compete for absorption (Desai and colleagues, Chirality, 2005). So every specification we write sets an assay for L-theanine and a limit for D-theanine. Every supplier passes our supplier approval, reviewed each year, before any material is used, and green tea grades come with documents that prove the tea origin, because that origin is what qualifies them for UK and EU food supplements.

Mild and soluble, L-theanine goes into almost any format

Its mild taste and high solubility let L-theanine go almost anywhere. SPINS data show the ingredient up 53% so far in 2026 across supplements and beverages, with growth in waters, shelf-stable coffee and energy drinks (New Hope Network, July 2026). Every format below is made in our Leicester facility, which is ISO 9001, HACCP and GMP certified by BSI, and FDA registered.

  • Capsules and tablets: a direct route to an exact daily dose, alone or in calm-focus blends; see capsule and tablet manufacturing.
  • Gummies: L-theanine needs little taste masking, which leaves room for fruit flavours and a short label; see gummy manufacturing.
  • Powders, sachets and stick packs: drink mixes in measured doses, often with magnesium or B vitamins.
  • Shots and drinks: for the UK and EU, we make L-theanine drinks as food supplements in dose form, such as shots. Ready-to-drink beverages with L-theanine are a US format, where GRAS notices cover L-theanine in drinks; see functional drink manufacturing.
  • Functional pouches: calm or focus pouches with L-theanine alone or with caffeine, released into saliva over a session; see nootropic, caffeine and energy pouches.

Capsules, gummies, pouches and liquids sit inside our BSI HACCP and GMP scope, so they are GMP certified. Caffeine, zinc and some B vitamins bring bitterness to a blend, and our flavour and taste masking work builds the flavour system around the most bitter active. Packs follow the format and the stability data: sealed bottles or blisters for capsules and tablets, foil stick packs and tubs for powders, moisture-barrier packs for gummies and sealed bottles for shots. Your formula is yours: the specification, the doses and the data belong to your brand.

Caffeine pairings, pouch uptake and acid breakdown in shots

97 to 250 mg with caffeine, 200 mg alone

Human studies set the working range. Paired with caffeine, L-theanine has been tested at 97 to 250 mg alongside 40 to 150 mg of caffeine (Owen and colleagues, 2008; Giesbrecht and colleagues, 2010; Haskell and colleagues, 2008), and a systematic review found that the pair improved alertness and attention-switching accuracy in the first two hours (Camfield and colleagues, Nutrition Reviews, 2014). The evidence for L-theanine alone is thinner. In a randomised, double-blind crossover trial in 30 healthy adults, 200 mg a day for about a month improved some sleep-quality scores against placebo, while most cognitive changes were seen within the L-theanine phase rather than against placebo (Hidese and colleagues, Nutrients, 2019). FDA's first GRAS notice for L-theanine covered foods at up to 250 mg per serving. We set each serving from this record, usually 100 to 200 mg, and print the daily total on the label.

Why a pouch still relies on the gut

L-theanine dissolves readily and is absorbed from the gut. In 12 healthy adults, 100 mg reached the blood on a comparable curve whether it was taken as capsules or as green tea (Scheid and colleagues, Journal of Nutrition, 2012), so a purified grade behaves like the tea it comes from. The body then breaks it down to glutamic acid and ethylamine. In a pouch, L-theanine dissolves into saliva that is swallowed, so the gut still does the absorbing: the pouch changes the moment of use, not the biology.

Hydrolysis in acidic shots and drinks

Dry L-theanine is a stable, white crystalline powder that suits capsules, tablets and powders without special protection. Liquids are different. L-theanine is an amide, and acid and heat hydrolyse it to glutamic acid and ethylamine. In a stability study of acidic liquid formulations stored at 4, 25 and 40 °C, L-theanine losses rose with temperature and ran faster at pH 2.4 than at pH 3.2 (Ter-Antonyan and colleagues, 2025). For shots and drinks, we therefore set pH, the heat process and overage from our own stability data, not from the raw material certificate. In gummies, L-theanine's amino group can react with reducing sugars during cooking, so we confirm the assay after cooking and across shelf life.

Caffeine, magnesium and citicoline partners

L-theanine pairs with caffeine, magnesium, B vitamins, citicoline and functional mushrooms. Once caffeine joins the formula, caffeine rules apply in full: EFSA found that single doses up to 200 mg, and up to 400 mg a day from all sources, raise no safety concerns for healthy adults outside pregnancy (EFSA, 2015), and labels carry the caffeine statement where the market requires it. Our page on choline, citicoline and alpha-GPC supplements covers the most common partner, and our functional mushroom page covers lion's mane blends.

Why UK and EU products use green tea L-theanine

As of October 2026, green tea L-theanine can be used in food supplements in the UK, the EU and the US. In the EU, L-theanine from other sources, and its use in other foods such as ready-to-drink beverages, needs novel food authorisation, as the Commission's novel food status catalogue sets out, so we use green tea L-theanine for UK and EU products and build their drinks as supplements in dose form. In the US, any documented grade can go into supplements, and FDA has raised no questions on GRAS notices for L-theanine in foods and drinks, including waters, juices and sports drinks at up to 250 mg per serving. Our regulation watch tracks every change that affects your product.

Calm and focus names need an authorised claim

No health claim is authorised for L-theanine in the UK or EU. Calm and focus products there carry nutrient claims from the GB nutrition and health claims register and the EU register in their exact wording, such as "Magnesium contributes to normal psychological function" or "Pantothenic acid contributes to normal mental performance", with the nutrient at a source level: at least 15% of its nutrient reference value in the daily dose. A product name built on "calm" or "focus" can itself be read as a health claim, so it needs an authorised claim beside it. In the US, structure and function claims such as "supports a calm, focused mind" carry FDA's disclaimer, are notified to FDA and need competent and reliable scientific evidence. We are an FDA registered food facility for dietary supplements.

Tea origin evidence and the document file

For each market we prepare the label text, the claims wording and the document file buyers and marketplaces ask for: the finished product specification, certificates of analysis, tea origin evidence for green tea grades, a stability summary and allergen statements.

Grade, source and tea origin papers, agreed before production

  1. Screen and specify. We screen every active in-house against the rules of each market you sell in, then agree grade, source, dose, D-theanine limit and label tolerance with you.
  2. Approve and receive. Supplier approval comes before any material is used, with a review every year. Each lot arrives with a certificate of analysis and, for green tea grades, origin documents.
  3. Weigh and blend. Materials are weighed against the batch record under our allergen management plan, with yellow colour coding, then blended and checked for uniformity.
  4. Fill, form or cook. Capsules are filled and checked by weight, tablets compressed, powders filled into tubs or stick packs, gummies cooked and deposited, and pouches dosed and sealed.
  5. Pack. Each product goes into the pack its stability study approved, coded with its batch number and best-before date.
  6. Label and release. Label verification on every batch is the critical control point in our HACCP plan, CCP-01. Three retained samples per batch are kept for shelf life plus one year, and nothing is dispatched without quality control sign-off.

D-theanine, the impurity an L-theanine manufacturer should limit

Ask how the label dose, the grade and the source are proved. Every batch is tested by accredited partner laboratories (ISO/IEC 17025) as part of every order, and your specification sets the release tests:

  • Assay: L-theanine by HPLC, at release and across shelf life. Gummies get an active assay on every batch as standard.
  • Enantiomeric purity: D-theanine by chiral HPLC, for every new supplier and for lots as the specification requires.
  • Contaminants and microbiology: lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic, with total viable count, yeasts and moulds.
  • Stability: accelerated and real-time studies on every new formula, tracking pH and assay in drinks, and colour and assay in gummies.

Our quality system adds a HACCP study per product type, reviewed annually, and a full mock recall, forward and backward with mass balance, in seconds; our testing and batch release page sets out the full approach. Research and development is a paid stage that can be included with an order of the right size. Start your project with your markets and formats, and we will propose the grade, the dose and the claims route.

Questions brands ask

Can L-theanine be sold in the UK and EU?

Yes, in food supplements. As of October 2026, green tea L-theanine can be used in food supplements in the UK and the EU. In the EU, L-theanine from other sources, and its use in other foods, needs novel food authorisation. So we use green tea L-theanine, with documents that prove its tea origin, for both markets, and we build UK and EU drinks as supplements in dose form, such as shots and stick packs.

Can we put L-theanine in a drink?

Yes, but the format depends on the market. As of October 2026, an L-theanine drink for the UK or EU is made as a food supplement in dose form, such as a shot or a sachet of powder, because green tea L-theanine is cleared there for food supplements only. In the US, FDA has raised no questions on GRAS notices for L-theanine in foods and drinks, so ready-to-drink beverages are a US format.

Which L-theanine grade should we use?

Use green tea L-theanine for anything sold in the UK or EU, and any documented grade for the US, where fermented and synthetic grades are also used. Grade also affects quality: some synthetic routes produce D-theanine, the mirror-image form, and an analysis of six commercial products found five were mixtures of both. Every specification we write sets an L-theanine assay and a D-theanine limit, checked on every new supplier.

What dose of L-theanine do products use?

Most products use 100 to 200 mg per serving, anchored to human studies. With caffeine, L-theanine has been studied at 97 to 250 mg alongside 40 to 150 mg of caffeine, and a trial of L-theanine alone in healthy adults used 200 mg a day. FDA's first GRAS notice covered foods at up to 250 mg per serving. We set the dose from that record and state the daily total on the label.

Can an L-theanine supplement claim to help calm or focus?

Not in the UK or EU, where no L-theanine health claim is authorised as of October 2026. Calm and focus products there carry nutrient claims in the register's exact wording, such as "Magnesium contributes to normal psychological function", with the nutrient at a source level. A calm or focus product name needs an authorised claim beside it. In the US, structure and function claims such as supporting a calm, focused mind can be used with FDA's disclaimer.

Which L-theanine formats do you make?

We make L-theanine capsules, tablets, gummies, powders, stick packs, shots and functional pouches, all in our Leicester facility, which is ISO 9001, HACCP and GMP certified by BSI, and FDA registered. Capsules, gummies, pouches and liquids are GMP certified within our BSI scope.
